Activity 2

Touch therapy: this program certifies volunteers and their own dogs to provide pet-assisted therapy to various care facilities in the st. Louis metropolitan area. This year, the program certified 48 new teams. Volunteers visited over 82,251 people (patients, residents, family members, facility staff) in over 76 sites. The program reached over 62,402 adults and 19,849 children. All services and touch visits are at no cost to the individual and the facilities.

Activity 3

Paws for reading and education program: this program utilizes volunteers from the touch program who have a recommendation to participate in paws for reading. Dogs are brought into classrooms and various other facilities in which the dog is used as an incentive for the children to read. This fiscal year, volunteers reached over 2,842 elementary age children (ages 5-13) in 16 local elementary classrooms and in various branches of the st. Louis public library system. All services are provided at no cost to the library and to the elementary schools.
