“Uptown bills provides a safe and sober environment for area residents, including people with disabilities, the elderly and underage students. The center offers coffee and ice cream, as well as used books for sale. An art gallery features local artists. Programming includes concerts,readings and exhibits, with live music every saturday night at 7 p.m. And sometimes other evenings as well. The venue typically hosts almost 400 group meetings a year. One of 11 groups meets every day in the large room. In addition, other groups use the space for seasonal or occasional meetings. Almost 500 people performed at open mic night, saturday night concerts or spoken word events. More than 1,000 receive the coffee shop newsletter. Several hundred more connect via facebook or twitter. More than 500 videos from various events were posted on the uptown bill's playlist on you tub. The organization collaborated with various community agencies and support groups and hosted expressive arts, an arts and crafts program, in cooperation with access to independence and combined efforts. A local tv show focusing on abilities awareness and produced in cooperation with public access television and others has now been on the air for more than five years. Extend the dream also co-sponsors the annual celebration of the american with disabilities act held each july in downtown iowa city. Co- sponsors of stage performance opportunites inlcuded iowa writers house, united nations association, ihearic, little village magazine, access to independence and a host of university of iowa student groups.”

THE ORGANIZATION'S VENUE IS NAMED AFTER BILL SACKTER, WHO WAS INSTITUTIONALIZED FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS BEFORE BEING BEFRIENDED AND BROUGHT TO IOWA CITY BY WRITER BARRY MORROW. SACKTER BECAME ONE OF IOWA CITY'S MOST WELL LOVED AND RESPECTED CITIZENS. |

THE CENTER OFFERS COFFEE AND ICE CREAM, AS WELL AS USED BOOKS FOR SALE. AN ART GALLERY FEATURES LOCAL ARTISTS. PROGRAMMING INCLUDES CONCERTS,READINGS AND EXHIBITS, WITH LIVE MUSIC EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT AT 7 P.M. AND SOMETIMES OTHER EVENINGS AS WELL. THE VENUE TYPICALLY HOSTS ALMOST 400 GROUP MEETINGS A YEAR. ONE OF 11 GROUPS MEETS EVERY DAY IN THE LARGE ROOM. IN ADDITION, OTHER GROUPS USE THE SPACE FOR SEASONAL OR OCCASIONAL MEETINGS. ALMOST 500 PEOPLE PERFORMED AT OPEN MIC NIGHT, SATURDAY NIGHT CONCERTS OR SPOKEN WORD EVENTS. MORE THAN 1,000 RECEIVE THE COFFEE SHOP NEWSLETTER. SEVERAL HUNDRED MORE CONNECT VIA FACEBOOK OR TWITTER. MORE THAN 500 VIDEOS FROM VARIOUS EVENTS WERE POSTED ON THE UPTOWN BILL'S PLAYLIST ON YOU TUB. THE ORGANIZATION COLLABORATED WITH VARIOUS COMMUNITY AGENCIES AND SUPPORT GROUPS AND HOSTED EXPRESSIVE ARTS, AN ARTS AND CRAFTS PROGRAM, IN COOPERATION WITH ACCESS TO INDEPENDENCE AND COMBINED EFFORTS. A LOCAL TV SHOW FOCUSING ON ABILITIES AWARENESS AND PRODUCED IN COOPERATION WITH PUBLIC ACCESS TELEVISION AND OTHERS HAS NOW BEEN ON THE AIR FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS. EXTEND THE DREAM ALSO CO-SPONSORS THE ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE AMERICAN WITH DISABILITIES ACT HELD EACH JULY IN DOWNTOWN IOWA CITY. CO- SPONSORS OF STAGE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITES INLCUDED IOWA WRITERS HOUSE, UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION, IHEARIC, LITTLE VILLAGE MAGAZINE, ACCESS TO INDEPENDENCE AND A HOST OF UNIVERSITY OF IOWA STUDENT GROUPS. |
