Activity 2

Productive Aging is the driving force behind the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a nationwide federal program of the Corporation for National and Community Service. RSVP volunteers are 55+, recruited and placed in volunteer positions that meet critical community needs that serve youth, elders and non-profit organizations. Volunteer activity is monitored and measured for impact on the population served. Volunteerism is a key to productive aging and contributes to prolonging the lifespan of retirees. In the year ended June 30, 2013, 529 RSVP volunteers provided 36,132 hours of service in four counties to 39 non-profit organizations, including schools, police departments, medical transportation, food banks, Meals on Wheels, courts, hospitals including the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Activity 3

The Geriatric Care program includes a continuum of services including Elderly Waiver Case Management; Elder Abuse Initiative protective services; Elder Answers information, referral, assistance, and care coordination services; Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counseling and assistance; on-site service coordination in low income senior housing (Ecumenical Towers); that assisted an estimate of more than 800 low-income frail elders to stay safe and independent in their own homes through provision and/or management of supportive services covering daily activities such as in-home non-medical assistance, and preventative home repair and minor modification.
