Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the center is to provide food, education, assistance and referrals in crisis situations and promote community awareness of needs and available resources. The monument crisis center provides crisis assistance to at-risk and extremely low income families with a 7-day supply of canned, dry packaged and fresh food. Clients are eligible to come once a month to pick up groceries; regularly attend classes, workshops, and programs; and utilize on-site collaborations and off-site referrals. We offer a friendly, respectful and supportive environment with a knowledgeable, culturally competent and dedicated staff. Our deep involvement in the contra costa community promotes awareness and connectivity, providing meaningful support to our client families.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Employment opportunity workshop - designed to assist clients in their job search by offering various job postings and announcements, guidance in job search techniques, help with creating an effective resume/cover letter, and provides referrals to local job networking groups. Clients can also receive assistance in interviewing techniques and time management.
Activity 3
Youth enrichment - with so many teens and children facing challenges every day such as gang pressures, anger, violence and neighborhood issues, the monument crisis center has set out to create a safe environment free of such distractions. The youth at the monument corridor have been assembling at the monument crisis center since its opening in 2003 when teens would come from local high schools and tutor children from cambridge elementary school and oak grove middle school. Finally, in september 2006 it became a formal program. The program is planned, prepared and executed completely by the local volunteer teens. Every tutoring session has a theme such as memorial day, mother's day and appreciation day. For each day the teens prepare snacks, set out art supplies and mentor the children with their homework or various arts and crafts activities.

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation3OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: YOUTH ENRICHMENT - WITH SO MANY TEENS AND CHILDREN FACING CHALLENGES EVERY DAY SUCH AS GANG PRESSURES, ANGER, VIOLENCE AND NEIGHBORHOOD ISSUES, THE MONUMENT CRISIS CENTER HAS SET OUT TO CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FREE OF SUCH DISTRACTIONS. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: (EXPENSES $ 274 INCLUDING GRANTS OF $0) (REVENUES $0)ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE - THE ESL PROGRAM STARTED IN 2004 WITH A FEW VOLUNTEERS THAT IDENTIFIED THE NEED IN OUR COMMUNITY FOR LEARNING ENGLISH. THE MAJORITY OF OUR CLIENTS ARE IMMIGRANTS WHO SPEAK LITTLE OR NO ENGLISH. THEY HAVE BEEN RECEIVING BASIC CONVERSATIONAL CLASSES THAT HELP THEM GET AROUND IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES. THE CLASSES HAVE BEEN EVOLVING THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. TODAY WE HAVE TEN REGULAR TEACHERS AND A 12 WEEK CYCLE, AND DIFFERENT PRACTICAL TOPICS ARE VIEWED EACH WEEK. EACH STUDENT IS PROVIDED WITH A DICTIONARY AND IS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL SESSIONS. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY WORKSHOP - DESIGNED TO ASSIST CLIENTS IN THEIR JOB SEARCH BY OFFERING VARIOUS JOB POSTINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS, GUIDANCE IN JOB SEARCH TECHNIQUES, HELP WITH CREATING AN EFFECTIVE RESUME/COVER LETTER, AND PROVIDES REFERRALS TO LOCAL JOB NETWORKING GROUPS. CLIENTS CAN ALSO RECEIVE ASSISTANCE IN INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES AND TIME MANAGEMENT.
