Activity 2

Advocacy and convening - mmep translates the outcomes of its research and convening into action by informing various decision makers of students, parents and community expectations and of objective data-informed policies. Mmep staff have been advisors on key policy projects including: the mnscu system's diversity initiative, growth and justice's "smart investments", organizing apprenticeship project's "legislative report card on race equity" and the mn p-20 council. Mmep has been instrumental in advocating on behalf of communities of color in the state of minnesota's federal "race to the top" application process. Mmep's students of color conference, a biannual gathering exploring best practices in educating students of color is well known and heavily attended by community advocates, educators, and leaders from across the state. The 2010 conference had over 400 minnesotans engaged in 22 best practices workshops on closing achievement gaps through effective policy and instructional approaches. Urban prep academy ceo, tim king, spoke of his success in educating, graduating and enrolling into college african american males from low income communities. Mmep surveys showed that overwhelmingly respondents learned something new from sessions that can be applied to their education settings.

Activity 3

Research and policy briefs - mmep's primary research activity involves publishing the state of students of color and american indian students in minnesota report, a unique and important report that captures the academic outcomes of students of color in minnesota. Reports from 2006-2011 have been directly shared with over 4,000 stakeholders in the community. In 2010, mmep produced the "college access matters ii" a report that covers the college-going patterns of diverse youth in minnesota - something no one else has done in our state. Additional policy work includes assessing the "state of african american men in education in mn" and the "state of higher education access by mn's undocumented immigrant youth". This work is guided by mmep's research collaborative table (rct), a one-of-a kind multi-racial state-wide collaboration of researchers, policy analysts and activists from various schools, colleges and cultural communities.
