The land stewardship project (lsp) was organized on june 1, 1982, as a division of the national catholic rural life conference and in 1983 was incorporated under the minnesota (mn) nonprofit corporation act. Lsp is supported primarily by contributions and grants from individuals, foundations, corporations, governmental agencies and membership revenue. Lsp wholly owns land stewardship legacy limited liability company (llc). The purpose of the llc is to own and operate the building in minneapolis where lsp currently leases office space. To support other nonprofit organizations whose missions support the broader work of lsp, we fiscally sponsor the midwest farmers of color collective.lsp fosters an ethic of stewardship toward farmland in the united states, promotes sustainable agriculture, and develops healthy communities. “Voting members are the board of directors. Lsp also has non-voting members.”
“Lsp gives the audit firm the necessary information to prepare the 990. A draft of the 990 is reviewed by management, management reviews the 990 with the board executive committee and then with the full board of directors. The board of directors has final approval of the 990.”
“All payments to interested parties are reviewed by the executive director and accountant, and if necessary by the board chair.”
“The executive committee reviews the executive director's performance and recommends salary increases to the full board. The salary is based on comparison salaries that can be found in the minnesota council of non-profits' "salary and benefits survey". The executive director reviews other key employees and salaries are based on performance and salary guidelines found in the minnesota council of non-profits' "salary and benefits survey". This is also used to update an employee salary schedule used by supervisors.”
“Governing documents are registered with the minnesota secretary of state's office, and are available to the public. Financial statements can be obtained through federal, minnesota state, or dun & bradstreet offices. Conflict of interest policy must be requested from lsp.”

“Lsp uses a zero-value approach in that the easement itself has no residual positive value. Lsp will set aside an on going escrow account of up to $30,000 and no less than $15,000 for monitoring and enforcement in perpetuity. As of year-end, no escrow account has been established.”
“To support the programs of land stewardship project to fulfill its mission.”
“Management believes lsp has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and accordingly, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | SEE SCHEDULE OPOLICY AND ORGANIZING - THE LAND STEWARDSHIP PROJECT'S POLICY ORGANIZING STARTS FROM VALUES LIKE STEWARDSHIP AND JUSTICE AND THEN ORGANIZES PEOPLE, RESOURCES, AND IDEAS TO BUILD THE POWER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WE WORK AT THE LOCAL, STATE, AND NATIONAL LEVELS TO CHANGE CORPORATE, GOVERNMENTAL, AND INSTITUTIONAL POLICIES AND PRACTICES. IN 2021, LSP INTRODUCED OUR SOIL HEALTHY FARMING BILL TO CREATE CLIMATE SOLUTIONS WITHIN AGRICULTURE. THE WORK BEGAN IN THE SUMMER OF 2020, WHEN LSP ENGAGED 675 AND SUPPORTERS THROUGH LISTENING SESSIONS AND SURVEYS TO DEVELOP CLIMATE SOLUTIONS IMPORTANT TO RURAL COMMUNITIES. DURING THE 2021 LEGISLATIVE SESSION, WE GENERATED 10,719 CALLS TO DECISION-MAKERS, TURNED OUT 985 PEOPLE TO EVENTS, CREATED A SIGN-ON LETTER WITH 47 ORGANIZATIONS, TRAINED 9 COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO TESTIFY AT LEGISLATIVE HEARINGS, AND GATHERED 2,664 PETITION SIGNATURES. IN THE END, THIS RESULTED IN THE LEGISLATURE PUTTING $5.35 MILLION INTO SUPPORTING FARMERS TO USE SOIL HEALTHY FARMING PRACTICES. LSP'S COMMITMENT TO CREATING A JUST HEALTH CARE SYSTEM FOR FARMERS AND RURAL COMMUNITIES GOES BACK 12+ YEARS. FROM 2020 THROUGH 2021, LSP ORGANIZED SEVERAL TACTICS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACTS AND PROPOSE SOLUTIONS TO OUR HEALTH SYSTEM, INCLUDING: CONDUCTING A FARM CRISIS SURVEY WHERE FARMERS REPORTED ON HOW HEALTH CARE IMPACTS THEIR ABILITY TO RUN AN ECONOMICALLY SUCCESSFUL FARM, CONDUCTING SURVEYS ABOUT THE IMPACTS OF THE PANDEMIC, AND HOSTING SEVERAL LISTENING SESSIONS AND VIRTUAL GATHERINGS. THAT ENGAGEMENT LED TO A SET OF POLICY PROPOSALS. FROM THERE, WE TRAINED AND ORGANIZED MEMBERS TO HOLD DISTRICT MEETINGS, WRITE LETTERS-TO-THE-EDITOR, TELL THEIR OWN PERSONAL STORIES, AND TESTIFY ON LEGISLATION. OVERALL THAT WORK, DEEPLY ENGAGED MORE THAN 500 RURAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND FARMERS IN ORGANIZING FOR A BETTER HEALTH SYSTEM. LSP HAS A LONG-STANDING COMMITMENT IN OUR THEORY OF CHANGE AND LONG-RANGE PLAN TO ADDRESSING SYSTEMIC RACISM BECAUSE RACIAL JUSTICE IS DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO JUST FOOD AND FARMING POLICY. IN OUR POLICY ORGANIZING, LSP HAS BEEN PARTNERING WITH BIPOC-LED ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING: BRINGING RURAL LSP MEMBERS TO CAMP AT THE LINE 3 PIPELINE RESISTANCE CAMPS WITH WATER PROTECTORS AND CRAFTING SOCIAL MEDIA MESSAGES WITH PERSONAL STORIES FOR ABOUT WHY STOPPING THIS PIPELINE IS IMPORTANT TO RURAL MINNESOTANS; FILING AN AMICUS BRIEF WITH THE HEAL FOOD ALLIANCE AND PUBLIC JUSTICE TO REPUDIATE LAWSUITS FROM A GROUP OF WHITE FARMERS CLAIMING "REVERSE DISCRIMINATION" IN USDA EQUITY PROGRAMS; AND PARTNERING WITH THE MIDWEST FARMERS OF COLOR COLLECTIVE TO BRING TOGETHER WHITE FARMERS AND FARMERS OF COLOR FOR MEDIA STORIES ADDRESSING SYSTEMIC DISCRIMINATION USDA LOANS. IN ADDITION, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TO SUPPORT RURAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO STAND UP AND SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES IS CENTRAL TO ALL OUR POLICY ORGANIZING. TO HELP BUILD THESE SKILLS, LSP RUNS AN ORGANIZING AND SOCIAL CHANGE COHORT: A 5-MONTH INTENSIVE TRAINING SERIES, WITH PARTICIPANTS MEETING BI-WEEKLY TO LEARN AND STRATEGIZE ON THE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS OF ORGANIZING, FROM DOING A POWER ANALYSIS, TO TELLING YOUR OWN PERSONAL STORY, TO CAMPAIGN PLANNING. IN 2020 AND 2021, THE COHORT BROUGHT IN AND TRAINED 73 NEW LEADERS. |
