Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The land stewardship project (lsp) was organized on june 1, 1982, as a division of the national catholic rural life conference and in 1983 was incorporated under the minnesota (mn) nonprofit corporation act. Lsp is supported primarily by contributions and grants from individuals, foundations, corporations, governmental agencies and membership revenue. Lsp wholly owns land stewardship legacy limited liability company (llc). The purpose of the llc is to own and operate the building in minneapolis where lsp currently leases office space. To support other nonprofit organizations whose missions support the broader work of lsp, we fiscally sponsor the midwest farmers of color collective.lsp fosters an ethic of stewardship toward farmland in the united states, promotes sustainable agriculture, and develops healthy communities. Lsp is dedicated to creating transformational change in our food

SEE SCHEDULE OThe Land Stewardship Project (LSP) works to foster an ethic of stewardship toward farmland in the United States, promote sustainable agriculture and develop healthy communities. Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 6

Voting members are the Board of Directors. LSP also has non-voting members.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

LSP gives the audit firm the necessary information to prepare the 990. A draft of the 990 is reviewed by management, management reviews the 990 with the Board Executive Committee and then with the full Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has final approval of the 990.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

All payments to interested parties are reviewed by the Executive Director and Accountant, and if necessary by the Board Chair.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The Executive Committee reviews the Executive Director's performance and recommends salary increases to the full board. The salary is based on comparison salaries that can be found in the Minnesota Council of Non-profits' "Salary and Benefits Survey". The Executive Director reviews other key employees and salaries are based on performance and salary guidelines found in the Minnesota Council of Non-profits' "Salary and Benefits Survey". This is also used to update an employee salary schedule used by supervisors.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

Governing documents are registered with the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office, and are available to the public. Financial statements can be obtained through federal, Minnesota State, or Dun & Bradstreet offices. Conflict of interest policy must be requested from LSP.

IRS990/Desc0SEE SCHEDULE OCommunity-Based Food Systems seeks to advance local and regional food systems in which food is grown with high levels of stewardship, racial equity is practiced, and landscape-level stewardship is achieved. In the Twin Cities, LSP: Partnered with the Hope Community, Inc. to: Involve 150 diverse low-income people in year-round seasonal activities to build skills, knowledge, and community around healthy food; Operated 2,400 square feet of existing community garden space and opened 5,000 square feet in the new Community Teaching Garden; Reported back to the community after the two years of listening with 415 community members through "Feeding the Root: A Food Justice Report of Phillips; and Engaged Somali and East African women elders in the gardens. LSP: Began work on soil health and runoff and urban watersheds; With partners utilized community-based participatory action research to investigate the potential for urban agriculture as a credible green infrastructure strategy with co-benefits to land access, food access, economic development, and environmental sustainability. LSP: Published a directory of 73 Community Supported Agriculture farms including those in rural MN and western Wisconsin; and Presented at an Earth Day Breakfast in conjunction with the Red Stag Supperclub. To achieve landscape-level stewardship in watersheds, LSP: Partnered with the Chippewa River Watershed Project and other government and private institutions as part of the Chippewa 10% Project (C10) and with Trout Unlimited in the Root River Watershed to address water quality, habitat and farmer profitability through continuous living cover. In the Chippewa River Basin, LSP and partners: Met individually with 79 farmers about stewardship values and options; Reached 197 people in eight workshops and field days, including farmers and ranchers who attended grazing and grassland conservation training by ranchers Jerry Doan and Greg Judy; Organized four networks of 103 farmers and landowners, which has led to changes in management on 3,137 additional acres of rotational grazing, cover crops, improved grasslands and conservation leases by women landowners, totaling 13,400 over the last 5 years; Expanded the Cover Crop and Soil Health network, featuring twice annual biological soil testing and two visits per year with a USDA-ARS Soil Scientist, to 21 farmers. Through GIS, LSP identified 105,000 acres of ecologically sensitive and marginal row crops fields that could benefit from more continuous living cover as perennials; Worked with a consultant RESPEC to use the Hydrologic Simulation Program FORTRAN model to predict that just 3.7% (49,378 acres) shifts to continuous living cover on corn soybean fields in the Chippewa River Watershed could achieve significant progress toward state-approved goals for in-stream reductions of nitrogen by 40%, phosphorous by 100% and total suspended solids by 30%; LSP developed and released the Cropping Systems Calculator, a unique farmer decision tool that compares corn and soybean rotations with longer rotations, cover crops and multiple forms of managed, rotational grazing on a per acre basis with both revenues (including crop insurance) and expenses. In the Root River, LSP: Worked with an advisory committee; Engaged 190 farmers/landowners about cover crops, rotational grazing; Cost-shared cover crops and Haney biological soil tests; Assisted 50 farmers and landowners to adopt cover crops, riparian grazing or conservation leases on 4,500 acres over two years; Held five workshops or field days on soil health, cover crops and appropriate stream-side grazing; With partners, co-organized a regional field day at a dairy farm on well managed pastures, succession planting with cover crop mixes, grazing corn for profitability, building soil and improving herd health, and explained soil testing being conducted on eight other project farms; With partners co-organized the "Land Ethic at Work" conference in April featuring works

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0see schedule oThe Policy and Organizing Program starts from LSP's values and then organizes growing number of people, resources and ideas to build the power to make a difference. We work at the local, state and national levels to change corporate, governmental and institutional policies and practices. At the federal level, LSP: Held three organizing meetings in New Ulm, Litchfield and Pine City with 74 people to seek input on future federal Farm Bill issues; Held two Federal Farm Policy Steering Committee meetings to reflect on input; Engaged member leaders in narrative development process leading up to a Leadership Assembly of the four Program Steering Committees to articulate the values and vision for the future and how the dominant story about agriculture supports excessive corporate power and blocks progress; Sent five members and two staff to talk about issues related to a future farm bill with members of Congress and their staff in April; and Published the "Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program: Progress Report on 2015 Awards" concluding that the programs is more popular than ever and continues to be a critical public investment in community-based organizations that conduct beginning farmer education and training. LSP co-led the Food and Ag Justice Campaign (FAJC), a collaboration with rural membership organizations in 10 states across the Midwest and West, to expand the base of people engaged. LSP: Sent 60,000 and 50,000 piece mailings with information about LSP's positions on excessive corporate power along with a different vision for the food and agriculture system, and the range of solutions to agricultural runoff that damages our waters, respectively; Conducted Facebook ads, phone banks and followed-up with respondents; Opposed the passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement because of its excessive benefits to corporate interests while having the potential to undermine fair labor standards, local control and state environmental protections through Educational phone banks coming up, meetings with Sens. Klobuchar and Franken; and signed onto a letter introduced in Washington, D.C. to the U.S. House Agriculture Committee. In conjunction with the Minnesota legislative session, LSP with allies: Engaged members to testify in support of reinstituting the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Citizens Board; Successfully fought efforts to weaken local control; Won $1 million for University of Minnesota's Forever Green Initiative -cutting-edge research on developing cover cropping and forage production systems that are profitable for farmers while protecting soil and water quality. LSP successfully sought the appointment of LSP farmer Darrel Mosel to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Agriculture Research, Education, Extension and Technology Transfer Advisory Panel. LSP: Joined the Toxic Taters Coalition working to stop the expansion of potato and row crops growing in forested areas overlying the Pineland Aquifer of north central Minnesota; Conducted 30 one-to-one individual meetings with members and others in the region; Held an organizing meeting on January 30 with about 75 people; With White Earth Land Recovery Project, sought a biomonitoring study by the Minnesota Department of Health on the impacts on human health of the use of chemicals in potato-growing region of Minnesota; and with the Coalition sought a thorough review by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources of the expansion of R. D. Offutt Company in this area. LSP and allies organized to oppose frac sand mining in southeast MN: Conducted county-level education on harmful environmental and health impacts from frac sand mining transportation and processing through yard signs and a fact sheet; Held two organizing meetings with 110 people; Distributed a non-partisan study and analysis "Legal and Practical Considerations in Support of a Zoning Ban on Frac Sand Operations in Winona County: A Review of Minnesota Statutes, Case Law, a

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SEE SCHEDULE OFarm Beginnings works to put more farmers on the land raising crops and livestock with good stewardship practices. To achieve this, LSP: Brings together people from current farming communities, people of color and people from urban centers to farmer-led, community-based training and support for new farmers: 788 people have graduated from the LSP's Farm Beginnings course in the region since 1997; Graduates are involved in a wide-range of agricultural enterprises, including grass-based livestock and organic vegetable production. LSP conducted a Farm Beginnings course with a total of 11 families in Amery, WI; Held 10 field days/ skills sessions; Held two "Farm Dreams" introductory workshops with 28 people; Held two workshops in partnership with the NW WI Workforce Center on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation; Created localized list serves for the LSP Farmer Network of 130 beginning and experienced farmers; The Farm Viability steering committee focused on labor and struggle to afford or manage labor; Conducted a LSP-wide farmer survey on labor; Held a workshop with Farm Commons on legal aspects of labor along with farmer-to-farmer discussions about labor issues and possible solutions; Presented at the MOSES conference, WI Farmers Union CSA conference; Featured on Wisconsin Public Television's show "Around the Farm Table." LSP continued the first three cohorts of the two-year Journeyperson course with 85 people, which assisted advanced beginning farmers with financial planning training, production mentoring, financial tracking and a matched savings account; Distributed $29,300 toward previous matched savings account program contracts. To achieve more secure, affordable and long term access to farmland for beginning farmers, LSP: Held a series of three Farm Transitions workshop with 17 people on legal, tax and long term healthcare issues, question-and-answer forums and networking with other farmers, tools to use in future planning, and support for creating a Farm Transition Plan; Published three stories on successful farm transitions between unrelated generations and the "Seeking Farmers-Seeking Land Clearinghouse" with 131 postings to identify options for farmers and land; Co-sponsored a March 19 in Millville with the Plainview Land Access Committee about what is encouraging beginning farmers to farm in this area, and to identify ways to make this area more of a destination; Through "Farmers Growing Communities" we engaged 30 leaders to deepen and strengthen community support for beginning farmers in Hutchinson, Starbuck and Amery, WI; Researched crop insurance on-line tools and viable options for beginning farmers to contribute to a better critique related to vegetable and livestock farmers; Interviewed nine beginning farmers about their use of risk management strategies and programs--results of that were published in the Land Stewardship Letter and in a podcast; Published a series of five 'Stages of Learning in Farming' Blog Series. To address racial justice, LSP: Held a training workshop at Hope Community with facilitated discussions to examine participants' roles in the food and farming system within the context of white privilege and identify steps to raise up racial justice as a core component of a new narrative about food, farming and justice. To strengthen beginning farmer training across the country, LSP co-convened the multi-state Farm Beginnings Collaborative with partners in ME, NE, NY, NC, ND, SC, SD and three programs in Il; Added Organic Growers School of North Carolina as a member; Worked with USDA Deputy Secretary's office to make it possible for Collaborative members to apply for Farm Service Agency (FSA) classification as providers of required borrower training for FSA programs.
