The land stewardship project (lsp) was organized on june 1, 1982, as a division of the national catholic rural life conference and in 1983 was incorporated under the minnesota (mn) nonprofit corporation act. Lsp is supported primarily by contributions and grants from individuals, foundations, corporations, governmental agencies and membership revenue. Lsp wholly owns land stewardship legacy limited liability company (llc). The purpose of the llc is to own and operate the building in minneapolis where lsp currently leases office space. To support other nonprofit organizations whose missions support the broader work of lsp, we fiscally sponsor the midwest farmers of color collective.lsp fosters an ethic of stewardship toward farmland in the united states, promotes sustainable agriculture, and develops healthy communities. “Voting members are the board of directors. Lsp also has non-voting members.”
“Lsp gives the audit firm the necessary information to prepare the 990. A draft of the 990 is reviewed by management, management reviews the 990 with the board executive committee and then with the full board of directors. The board of directors has final approval of the 990.”
“All payments to interested parties are reviewed by the executive director and accountant, and if necessary by the board chair.”
“The executive committee reviews the executive director's performance and recommends salary increases to the full board. The salary is based on comparison salaries that can be found in the minnesota council of non-profits' "salary and benefits survey". The executive director reviews other key employees and salaries are based on performance and salary guidelines found in the minnesota council of non-profits' "salary and benefits survey". This is also used to update an employee salary schedule used by supervisors.”
“Governing documents are registered with the minnesota secretary of state's office, and are available to the public. Financial statements can be obtained through federal, minnesota state, or dun & bradstreet offices. Conflict of interest policy must be requested from lsp.”

“This process has not changed since the prior year,”
“Lsp uses a zero-value approach in that the easement itself has no residual positive value. Lsp will set aside an on going escrow account of up to $30,000 and no less than $15,000 for monitoring and enforcement in perpetuity. As of year-end, no escrow account has been established.”
“To support the programs of land stewardship project to fulfill its mission.”
“Management believes lsp has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and accordingly, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | SEE SCHEDULE OCOMMUNITY-BASED FOOD SYSTEMS - THE COMMUNITY-BASED FOOD SYSTEMS PROGRAM IS WORKING FOR A JUST, SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEM FOR ALL ONE IN WHICH FOOD IS PRODUCED AT A HIGH LEVEL OF STEWARDSHIP FOR OUR SOIL AND WATER, AND WITH JUSTICE FOR ALL PEOPLE. SOME EXAMPLES FROM 2018 INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: LSP UPDATED AND DISSEMINATED OUR CROPPING SYSTEMS CALCULATOR TO CALCULATE HOW DECISIONS MADE ON AN INDIVIDUAL FARM WOULD IMPACT WATER-CAUSED SOIL LOSS. THE CALCULATOR WAS ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED IN WESTERN MINNESOTA, AND LSP HAS BEEN GRADUALLY EXPANDING ITS PARAMETERS TO BE HELPFUL TO MORE TYPES OF FARMS AND MORE REGIONS. LSP HELD TWO EDUCATIONAL EVENTS IN WESTERN MINNESOTA FOR FARMERS. ONE WAS A LATE FALL FIELD DAY ON COVER CROPS (NOVEMBER 17 IN BRANDON, MN, WHICH 18 FARMERS ATTENDED); THE OTHER A DAY-LONG WINTER WORKSHOP CALLED "BRINGING LIVESTOCK BACK" (JANUARY 19 IN GLENWOOD, MN WHICH DREW 37 PARTICIPANTS INCLUDING FARMERS AND AGENCY PERSONNEL). BOTH FOCUSED ON FARM PRACTICES AND ENTERPRISES THAT LEAD TO BETTER STEWARDSHIP AND FINANCIAL VIABILITY. OVER THE WINTER AND EARLY SPRING, LSP ORGANIZED THREE WORKSHOPS (ONE EACH IN SE MINNESOTA, WESTERN MN, AND THE METRO AREA) CALLED "MANAGING FOR STEWARDSHIP: FARMLAND OWNERSHIP AND RENTAL WORKSHOP." THE THREE WORKSHOPS WERE ATTENDED BY 120 PARTICIPANTS, NEARLY ALL FARMERS OR NON-OPERATING LANDOWNERS, WHO WERE THE TARGET AUDIENCE. MORE THAN HALF OF MIDWESTERN FARMLAND IS ABSENTEE-OWNED, MOST COMMONLY BY NON-OPERATING LANDOWNERS WHO RECEIVED THE LAND FROM THEIR PARENTS OR GRANDPARENTS. THE MAJORITY OF THESE LANDOWNERS ARE WOMEN. THESE WORKSHOPS ARE ATTEMPTING TO PROVIDE TOOLS AND MOTIVATION FOR CONSERVATION-MINDED NON-OPERATING LANDOWNERS TO TAKE ACTION TO IMPROVE LAND STEWARDSHIP ON THE FARMLAND THEY OWN. PARTNERING WITH THE HOPE COMMUNITY OF MINNEAPOLIS IN A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL PROJECT THAT INCLUDES FULL USE OF THREE GARDEN SPACES AT HOPE COMPRISING NEARLY 10,000 SQUARE FEET; TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL HOUSEHOLDS IN FOOD PREPARATION, NUTRITION, AND GARDENING; AND ENGAGEMENT OF PARTICIPANTS IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT OPTIONS FOR ACTION THAT THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS AND THE MINNEAPOLIS PARK BOARD COULD TAKE TO ADVANCE URBAN AGRICULTURE AND RACIAL EQUITY. AT LEAST 274 PEOPLE ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE PHILLIPS COMMUNITY PARTICIPATED IN GARDENING, COOKING CLASSES, SKILLS SHARES WITH OTHER PARTICIPANTS, COMPOSTING DEMONSTRATIONS, OR SAFE HARVESTING/HANDLING CLASS. THROUGH THE NEWLY FORMED GOOD FOOD PURCHASING PROGRAM, A GRASSROOTS COALITION LED BY LSP WORKING TO CREATE A TRANSPARENT AND EQUITABLE FOOD SYSTEM THROUGH MARKET PULL VIA INSTITUTIONAL PURCHASES, WE CONDUCTED AN ASSESSMENT OF THE MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS' NUTRITION PROGRAM ALONG FIVE CORE VALUES: PURCHASES THAT SUPPORT LOCAL ECONOMIES, HEALTH, A VALUED WORKFORCE, ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY, AND ANIMAL WELFARE. EFFORTS OF LSP AND PARTNERS IN THE CHIPPEWA RIVER WATERSHED THROUGH THE CHIPPEWA 10% PROJECT IMPROVED CONSERVATION ON 5,014 ACRES THROUGH BETTER COVER, NO-TILL ADOPTION, GRASSLAND EASEMENTS, IMPROVED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT, AND IMPROVED GRAZING PRACTICES. THE CUMULATIVE TOTAL IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS HAS BEEN MORE CONSERVATION ON 29,498 ACRES WITH CONTINUOUS LIVING COVER INTRODUCED ON 18,244 ACRES. |
