“The nami minnesota board of directors shall establish the salary of the executive director based on the annual survey of salaries conducted by the minnesota council of nonprofits. | IRS990/Desc | 0 | EDUCATION:OPERATING IN A PANDEMIC IS HARD, ESPECIALLY SINCE SO MUCH OF NAMI MINNESOTA'S WORK INVOLVES CONNECTING TO PEOPLE. BUILDING ON WHAT WE LEARNED DURING THE LAST QUARTER OF FY 2020, WE MANAGED TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED THROUGH OUR CLASSES AND MAINTAINED 50% OF OUR SUPPORT GROUPS. KNOWING THAT THERE ARE INCREASED NEEDS FOR MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION AND SUPPORT DUE TO THE IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC, WE ARE PROUD OF OUR EFFORTS TO MEET THE DEMANDS ACROSS THE STATE. IN FISCAL YEAR 2021, NAMI DOUBLED THE NUMBER OF CLASSES FOR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE AN ADULT RELATIVE WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS, REACHING 200% MORE PEOPLE THAN THE YEAR BEFORE. FOR FAMILIES OF CHILDREN, WE HAD TO SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGE HOW THE INFORMATION WAS PRESENTED DUE TO THE FACT THAT PARENTS, WHO WERE TRYING TO WORK AND SUPPORT DIRECT DISTANCE LEARNING, HAD LITTLE TIME AND LITTLE FLEXIBILITY IN THEIR SCHEDULES. WE CREATED "NAMI MOMENTS" WHICH WERE 15 TO 25-MINUTE SEGMENTS AND WE TAPED OTHER CLASSES COVERING A WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS FROM WELLNESS ISSUES SUCH AS NUTRITION AND SLEEP, TO HOW TO HELP A CHILD WITH ANXIETY COPE DURING A PANDEMIC. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO CLICKED ON THE NINE VIDEOS WERE 760 AND WE HAD OVER 500 PEOPLE ATTEND THE CLASSES LIVE. ROUGHLY 200 PEOPLE WATCHED ONE OF THREE FAMILY EDUCATION VIDEOS IN SPANISH. NAMI RUNS TWO PROJECTS IN DAKOTA AND SCOTT COUNTIES WHERE WE PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE AND OFFER EDUCATION AND SUPPORT. NAMI MINNESOTA IS ALSO A PART OF THE CHILDREN'S SYSTEM OF CARE GRANT, FOCUSING ON ENSURING PARENT AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT IN THE DESIGN OF THE MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM. THROUGH THAT GRANT WE WERE ABLE TO EDUCATE OVER 470 COUNTY STAFF AND 184 FAMILIES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF A FAMILY DRIVEN MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM. OUR FAMILY PEER SPECIALIST IS UNDER A PARTIAL CONTRACT WITH THREE OF THE PROGRAMS RUNNING A FIRST EPISODE OF PSYCHOSIS PROGRAM TO PROVIDE EDUCATION AND SUPPORT TO FAMILIES WHOSE TEEN OR YOUNG ADULT IS EXPERIENCING A FIRST PSYCHOTIC EPISODE. NAMI MINNESOTA OFFERED 55 CLASSES ONLINE REACHING NEARLY 2,000 PEOPLE. CLASSES PROVIDED INFORMATION ON TOPICS SUCH AS TARDIVE DYSKINESIA, SCHOOL ANXIETY, EATING DISORDERS, GAMING ADDICTION, POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY, AND MINDFULNESS. WE COLLABORATED WITH THE MN ASSOCIATION FOR CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH TO PRESENT A SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR TEACHERS BEFORE THEY WENT BACK INTO THE SCHOOLS IN FEBRUARY TO HELP THEM ADDRESS THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS OF CHILDREN AND WE PARTNERED WITH THE MPLS VA TO ADDRESS GRIEF OF VETERANS DURING MEMORIAL DAY.DISTANCE LEARNING MADE IT DIFFICULT TO REACH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, BUT WE STILL MANAGED TO DELIVER A NATIONAL NAMI PROGRAM CALLED ENDING THE SILENCE, TO OVER 4,000 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. WE ALSO CREATED A CLASS FOR STUDENTS ON DEALING WITH ANXIETY. DURING CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH MONTH, WE HELD A DAILY STORY-TIME THE FIRST WEEK WHICH FEATURED CHILDREN'S BOOKS BEING READ BY LOCAL CELEBRITIES INCLUDING LT. GOV. PEGGY FLANAGAN, KARE 11'S GIA VANG, VIKINGS PLAYER HARRISON HAND, REP. CARLOS MARIANI ROSA, CONGRESSMAN TOM EMMER, AUTHOR DR. MELISSA MUNRO BOYD, AND EDUCATION COMMISSIONER MARY CATHRYN RICKER. THE SUICIDE RATE ACTUALLY WENT DOWN IN 2020 BUT HAD REACHED AN ALL-TIME HIGH IN 2019. WHILE SOME OF THE EVIDENCE-BASED PROGRAMS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO BE PRESENTED VIRTUALLY, SUCH AS ASIST OR SAFETALK, NAMI FOCUSED ON QPR AND WAS ABLE TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF QPR CLASSES TAUGHT AND WE REACHED TWICE AS MANY PEOPLE AS LAST YEAR (1,227). WE WERE ABLE TO OFFER IT IN SPANISH AS WELL. WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE CALM CLASS WHICH TEACHES MEANS RESTRICTION SIX TIMES AND DONATED OVER 100 LOCKBOXES TO CRISIS TEAMS AND EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS TO DISTRIBUTE TO PARENTS TO HELP KEEP THEIR CHILDREN SAFE. WE CONTINUED TO COLLABORATE WITH UMASH TO BRING SUICIDE PREVENTION TO FARM COMMUNITIES, AND WITH THE SUICIDE SURVIVORS CLUB TO HELP FAMILIES HEAL AFTER A SUICIDE. A VARIETY OF PROFESSIONALS REACH OUT TO NAMI FOR EDUCATION INCLUDING TEACHERS, PEOPLE WHO WORK WITH OLDER ADULTS AND MENTAL H |
