Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Through education, support, and advocacy, nami minnesota champions justice, dignity, and respect for all individuals and families affected by mental illnesses. To serve that mission, nami minnesota works with individuals with mental illnesses, their families, professionals, youth, and the community at large by providing education, support, and advocacy.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Support: nami offered 49 ongoing peer-to-peer support groups statewide for family members, adults living with a mental illness, parents of children, spouses/partners, veterans and lgbtq-identified people. In addition to support groups, nami offers kidshops, a class for children with a sibling or parent with a mental illness. Nami also trains the mentors for the veterans' mental health court in hennepin county. Nami fielded over 4,000 telephone calls last year from people seeking advice and resources. Nami wrote and published seven booklets on a variety of topics (mental health system, data practices, criminal justice system, etc.), with an eighth on juvenile justice expected this fall.
Activity 3
Advocacy: in an effort to reduce stigma and increase understanding about mental illnesses, staff and volunteers conducted 98 presentations to 3,500 people at workplaces and major conferences. These presentations included in our own voice, understanding stigma, mental illnesses in the workplace and mental illness 101. Nami had booths at over 20 events, including all major mental health conferences, jail resource fairs, health fairs and the minnesota state fair. Over 5,000 booth visitors received pencils after taking a quiz, and inscribed on the pencil was "erase stigma - write a new future for mental illness." this year a rubber bracelet will be handed out with "changing minds" on it. Nami has collaborated with twin cities public television (tpt) to produce three videos - on adult mental health, children's mental health and returning soldiers, and developed two others on our own on jail discharge planning and residential treatment for children. Each includes real people sharing their stories, since the most effective way to reduce stigma is through personal stories. The videos are posted on youtube and are aired periodically on tpt. Nami uses traditional methods, social media and e-marketing to disseminate information to people throughout the state. A regular e-blast is sent twice per month to nearly 5,000 people and a namiwalk e-blast goes out to twice that many. Nami has over 1,000 facebook fans, and we have increased our fans by 25% in the last 6 months. Nami also provides information and news through our twitter account, @namiminnesota. We currently have over 500 followers and tweet and retweet between 2 and 10 times per day. The advocate newsletter is sent to 6,000 people on a quarterly basis, including members, licensed mental health providers, all legislators and members of local advisory committees on mental health. Nami actively sends press releases, editorials, letters to the editor and columns to newspapers across the state. This last fiscal year 221 newspapers published 1,342 nami articles. The nami minnesota website received over 23,433 unique visitors and 40,017 total visitors, with a 55% increase in new visitors compared to the previous year. Public policy is an important part of nami's mission. Nami minnesota is viewed as a leader in the public policy arena, educating candidates, elected officials and state and county staff on mental illnesses, effectiveness of programs and unmet needs. Nami staff and volunteers are represented on over 40 different committees and advisory committees. Nami is viewed as an important collaborator and frequently brings together interested parties to create consensus on major issues such as the use of seclusion and restraints in the schools and licensing of corporate foster care. Nami has conducted targeted work on specific issues such as the criminalization of mental illness and custody relinquishment.

IRS990/Description0EDUCATION: IN FISCAL YEAR 2011, NAMI MINNESOTA SPONSORED 89 FREE WORKSHOPS IN NEARLY EVERY REGION OF THE STATE THAT WERE ATTENDED BY OVER 1,000 PEOPLE WHO HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS. THESE CLASSES PROVIDE INFORMATION ON MENTAL ILLNESSES, THE BRAIN, AND BEHAVIORS AS SYMPTOMS, COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND SPECIFIC SKILLS TO ASSIST A FAMILY MEMBER. CLASSES INCLUDE FAMILY-TO-FAMILY, HOPE FOR RECOVERY, FAMILY CONNECTIONS, CHILDREN'S CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR (CCB), WHAT WORKS WHAT HELPS, MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS PLANNING FOR FAMILIES, AND MORE. FAMILY-TO-FAMILY, A 12 WEEK CLASS, WAS RECENTLY EVALUATED BY RESEARCHERS TO BE EFFECTIVE FOR ENHANCING COPING SKILLS AND INCREASING THEIR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESSES AND THEY CONCLUDED THAT THE CLASS MERITS FURTHER STUDY AS AN EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE. A NEW CLASS THIS YEAR WAS FAMILY CONNECTIONS, A FAMILY-TO-FAMILY CLASS SPECIFICALLY FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE A LOVED ONE LIVING WITH BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER. HOPE FOR RECOVERY IS A ONE DAY CLASS THAT IS PRESENTED THROUGHOUT THE STATE AND THAT PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESSES AND COPING STRATEGIES. CCB AND WHAT WORKS WHAT HELPS FOCUS ON CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AND INCLUDE INFORMATION ON EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES, INCLUDING WHICH TREATMENTS OR PRACTICES ARE MOST EFFECTIVE FOR CERTAIN DIAGNOSES AND HOW TO OBTAIN AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS. MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS PLANNING TEACHES FAMILIES ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS TEAMS AND ASSISTS THEM IN DEVELOPING A CRISIS PLAN FOR THEIR LOVED ONE. ALL CLASSES ARE TAUGHT BY PEOPLE WHO HAVE A LOVED ONE WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS THAT RECEIVE SPECIAL TRAINING FROM NAMI MINNESOTA. NAMI IS COMMITTED TO REACHING ALL COMMUNITIES. WE HAVE A DIRECTOR OF MULTICULTURAL OUTREACH WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY IT IS TO REACH OUT TO DIVERSE COMMUNITIES AND ENSURE THAT OUR CURRICULUM IS APPROPRIATE. WE RECENTLY REVISED OUR CHILDREN'S CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS CURRICULUM TO INCLUDE THE IMPACT OF TRAUMA AND HISTORICAL RACISM FOR THE AMERICAN INDIAN AND AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES AND PROVIDED OUR HOPE FOR RECOVERY CLASS IN SPANISH. NAMI'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IS ONE OF THE SIX MEMBERS OF MINNESOTA'S STATE DELEGATION FOR THE 2011 NATIONAL POLICY SUMMIT TO ADDRESS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH DISPARITIES WITHIN HEALTH REFORM. WE WILL ALSO BE PROVIDING A CLASS ON OLDER ADULT MENTAL HEALTH IN RUSSIAN AND VIETNAMESE. NAMI BOARD AND STAFF ARE UNDERTAKING QUARTERLY TRAININGS ON RACISM, WHITE PRIVILEGE AND OTHER TOPICS TO INCREASE THE CULTURAL COMPETENCY OF THE ORGANIZATION. KNOWING THAT PROFESSIONALS HAVE AN IMPACT ON HOW CHILDREN AND ADULTS AND THEIR FAMILIES ARE TREATED, NAMI PROVIDED 71 CLASSES TO OVER 2000 PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID AND SPECIAL TRAININGS FOR JAIL STAFF, TEACHERS, MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, HOSPITAL STAFF, CHILDREN'S RESIDENTIAL STAFF AND OTHERS. NEW THIS YEAR IS THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT MEANS RESTRICTION EDUCATION PROGRAM, WHICH IS CLASSIFIED AS EFFECTIVE BY THE SUICIDE PREVENTION RESOURCE CENTER. NAMI PROVIDES EDUCATION TO CRISIS TEAMS, EMERGENCY ROOM STAFF, AND STAFF OF MENTAL HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE CENTERS ON HOW TO EDUCATE FAMILIES ABOUT RESTRICTING ACCESS TO LETHAL MEANS SUCH AS OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS, PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS AND GUNS. FREE LOCK BOXES AND GUN LOCKS ARE ALSO HANDED OUT. GRAY MATTERS IS A NEW CURRICULUM DEVELOPED TO TEACH PEOPLE WHO WORK WITH OLDER ADULTS ABOUT DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY. NAMI RECENTLY LAUNCHED AN ANTI-STIGMA EFFORT IN INPATIENT PSYCHIATRIC UNITS AT HOSPITALS TO PROMOTE RECOVERY, PROVIDE SCIENCE-BASED INFORMATION AND TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESSES. AN ONLINE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR HOSPITAL STAFF WENT LIVE THIS YEAR AND IS ACCESSIBLE THROUGH OUR WEBSITE. FOR NINE YEARS NAMI HAS HELD A RESEARCH DINNER WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA. THE GOAL IS TO BRING RESULTS OF NEW RESEARCH TO INDIVIDUALS WHO LIVE WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES, THEIR FAMILIES AND PROFESSIONALS AND TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT NEW STUDIES THAT NEED PARTICIPANTS. THE DINNER PROVIDES HOPE TO T
