Financial Statement Notes

PART IV, LINE 2B:

Nami is the fiscal agent for two small coalitions in minnesota. It is also a fiscal agent for several nami affiliates that either have a fiscal sponsor agreement with nami or because the affiliate does not have a bank account.

PART V, LINE 4:

The purpose of the endowment funds is to ensure financial stability by providing a steady stream of investment income which is available for restricted and unrestricted purposes.

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, therefore, the statements do not include a provision for income taxes. The organization reviews income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in income tax returns to determine if there are any income tax uncertainties. This includes positions that the entity is exempt from income taxes or not subject to income taxes on unrelated business income. The organization recognizes tax benefits from uncertain tax positions only if it is more likely than not that the tax positions will be sustained on examination by taxing authorities, based on the technical merits of the positions. The organization has identified no income tax uncertainties. The organization files information returns as a tax-exempt organization. Should that status be challenged in the future, all years since inception could be subject to review by the irs.

PART XI, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Direct expenses of fundraising event -43,384.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Direct expenses of fundraising event 43,384.

IRS990/Desc0EDUCATION AND SUPPORT:TO CREATE A COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES TO HEAL AND RECOVER, OUR COMMUNITY NEEDS TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESSES, KNOW HOW TO HELP AND SUPPORT THOSE IMPACTED BY MENTAL ILLNESSES AND ELIMINATE STEREOTYPES AND BIASES. TO DO THIS, NAMI MINNESOTA REACHED MORE THAN 216,000 PEOPLE DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY THROUGH ALL ITS PROGRAMS. THIS WAS AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR IN THAT THE NAMI MINNESOTA OFFICES MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION AFTER TEN YEARS. THE NEW OFFICE IS LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCOMMODATE OUR GROWING STAFF AND HOLD TRAININGS ON SITE. IN ADDITION, IT IS NEAR A LIGHT RAIL STOP AND A BIKE PATH MAKING IT MORE ACCESSIBLE TO VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF. THE OFFICE IS MORE ATTUNED TO THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS OF STAFF IN THAT THERE IS A WHITE NOISE MACHINE TO REDUCE DISTRACTIONS, LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHT AND NO FLUORESCENT LIGHTING AND THERE IS A QUIET ROOM. IN ADDITION, A NEW WEBSITE WAS LAUNCHED ON JULY 1ST THAT IS MORE MOBILE FRIENDLY, INCLUDES A CALENDAR THAT CAN BE SORTED BY COUNTY OR TYPE OF PROGRAMMING AND HAS A HEALTH LIBRARY. LASTLY, NAMI CONTINUES TO COLLABORATE WITH A VARIETY OF ORGANIZATIONS, MOST NOTABLY THIS PAST YEAR WITH THE SCIENCE MUSEUM AS THEY CREATED THE MENTAL HEALTH MIND MATTERS EXHIBIT. NAMI STAFF PROVIDED INFORMATION, RESOURCES AND INPUT INTO ITS DEVELOPMENT. IN FISCAL YEAR 2018, NAMI REACHED 950 FAMILY MEMBERS THROUGH ITS EIGHT DIFFERENT CLASSES THAT PROVIDE INFORMATION ON ADULT AND CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND RANGE FROM A TWO-HOUR CLASS TO A 12-WEEK CLASS. THE CLASSES PROVIDE INFORMATION ON MENTAL ILLNESSES, THE BRAIN, CRISIS PLANNING AND HOW TO HELP A LOVED ONE, INCLUDING A CHILD. NAMI RUNS TWO PROJECTS IN DAKOTA AND SCOTT COUNTIES WHERE PARENTS' NIGHTS AND OTHER CLASSES ARE HELD TO SUPPORT PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS AND ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE IS PROVIDED. PROFESSIONALS WHO INTERACT WITH PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES AND THEIR FAMILIES SUCH AS TEACHERS, NURSES, MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, AND POLICE NEED EDUCATION AS WELL. NAMI OFFERS TWO ONLINE TRAININGS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF INVOLVING FAMILIES AND DE-ESCALATION AND AN ONLINE CLASS ADDRESSING THE HIGH RATE OF SMOKING AMONG ADULTS WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES WILL BE LAUNCHED THIS YEAR. PEOPLE WHO HAVE A SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS ARE AGING AND OLDER ADULTS ARE DEVELOPING DEPRESSION AND OTHER MENTAL ILLNESSES AND SO NAMI PROVIDES EDUCATION TO PEOPLE WHO WORK WITH OLDER ADULTS TO BETTER CARE AND SUPPORT THEM. NAMI REACHED 2,265 PROFESSIONALS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PUBLIC AWARENESS AND PUBLIC POLICY:CHANGING PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARDS MENTAL ILLNESSES AND INCREASING THE PUBLIC'S MENTAL HEALTH LITERACY ARE CRITICAL TO THE COMMUNITY ACCEPTING PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES. NAMI IS MOVING AWAY FROM USING THE WORD "STIGMA AND CALLING IT WHAT IT IS - DISCRIMINATION. ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO DISRUPT STEREOTYPES IS WHEN PEOPLE SHARE THEIR OWN STORIES. THE IN OUR OWN VOICE PROGRAM HELPS PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES SHAPE THEIR STORIES OF RECOVERY. IN ADDITION, NAMI COLLABORATES ON THE MAKE IT OK CAMPAIGN AND HAS A SPEAKERS' BUREAU. THESE THREE PROGRAMS REACHED OVER 3,800 PEOPLE. BY OFFERING MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID (FOUR DIFFERENT VERSIONS) MORE THAN 700 PEOPLE INCREASED THEIR MENTAL HEALTH LITERACY. PRESENTATIONS TO CULTURALLY SPECIFIC COMMUNITIES AND OTHERS, INCLUDING PRESENTING AT CONFERENCES, REACHED 3,651 PEOPLE. WITH HALF OF ALL MENTAL ILLNESSES EMERGING BY THE AGE OF 14, EDUCATING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESSES IS CRUCIAL TO EARLY IDENTIFICATION AND TREATMENT AND SUICIDE PREVENTION. NAMI MINNESOTA DELIVERED A NATIONAL NAMI PROGRAM CALLED ENDING THE SILENCE, WHICH EDUCATES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, TO 9,675 STUDENTS, A THREE-FOLD INCREASE FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR. PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS HAVE THE HIGHEST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AND YET WORKING HELPS PEOPLE GET BETTER. NAMI FOUND THAT FEW EMPLOYERS ARE AWARE OF ACCOMMODATIONS FOR A MENTAL ILLNESS OR KNOW HOW TO START THE CONVERSATION. WITH THE ADVICE OF EMPLOYERS, NAMI CREATED A ONE HOUR WORKSHOP FOR EMPLOYERS ON HOW TO ADDRESS STRESS, BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF MENTAL ILLNESSES IN THE WORKPLACE AND ACCOMMODATIONS. THIS WAS PRESENTED TO 735 EMPLOYEES AT 17 COMPANIES. THE RISING RATE OF SUICIDE IN MINNESOTA AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAS LED TO A MORE INTENSE EFFORT TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ON HOW TO PREVENT SUICIDES. SIX DIFFERENT CLASSES ARE OFFERED, INCLUDING MEANS RESTRICTION EDUCATION, QPR, SAFETALK, ASIST, SURVIVOR VOICES AND POSTVENTION. NAMI REACHED 6,313 PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE STATE, DOUBLING THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE REACHED. THIS YEAR ONE OF THE CLASSES, QPR IS BEING OFFERED TWICE A MONTH AT THE NAMI OFFICE. LOCKBOXES ARE GIVEN TO CRISIS TEAMS, EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS AND SCHOOLS TO DISTRIBUTE TO PARENTS TO HELP KEEP THEIR CHILDREN SAFE. IT IS DIFFICULT TO FACE A MENTAL ILLNESS AND WE LEARN SO MUCH FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE TRAVELED THE JOURNEY. NAMI'S 72 PEER-LED SUPPORT GROUPS PROVIDE SUPPORT TO FAMILY MEMBERS, ADULTS LIVING WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS, PARENTS OF CHILDREN, SPOUSES/PARTNERS, YOUNG ADULTS WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES, AND PEOPLE WHO IDENTIFY AS LGBTQ. TO ADDRESS BARRIERS TO ACCESSING THE GROUPS SUCH AS TRANSPORTATION, TWO WEB-BASED SUPPORT GROUPS WERE LAUNCHED THIS YEAR WITH A THIRD STARTING IN OCTOBER. NAMI IS THE STATE'S OUTREACH PARTNER FOR THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH, WHICH PROVIDES US WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO DISTRIBUTE THEIR MATERIALS AND PROMOTE RESEARCH AT OVER 100 BOOTHS A YEAR, INCLUDING THE MINNESOTA STATE FAIR, FURTHER BROADENING THE IMPACT WE HAVE AS AN AGENCY. TO PROMOTE THE IMPORTANCE AND AWARENESS OF THE LATEST MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND RESEARCH, NAMI HOSTS A RESEARCH DINNER WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY EACH YEAR, AS WELL AS THE ANNUAL NAMI STATE CONFERENCE AND ANNUAL BABY BLUES CONFERENCE ON MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH AND ALL THREE CONFERENCES TOGETHER REACHED OVER 500 PEOPLE.
