Major Activities

Activity 2
Literary artsthe third of three programs that arts midwest manages for the national endowment for the arts is the big read, which is designed to revitalize the role of literature in american culture and to inspire citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The big read supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. Organizations selected to participate in the big read receive a grant, access to online training resources and opportunities, and educational and promotional materials designed to support widespread community involvement.each community engagement lasts approximately one month and includes a kick-off celebration to launch the program locally; major educational activities devoted specifically to the book (panel discussions, author reading, etc.); events using the book as a point of departure (film screenings, theatrical readings, and so forth); and book discussions in diverse locations and aimed at a wide range of audiences. In 2011-2012, 75 nonprofit organizations (including arts organizations, museums, universities, and libraries) and municipalities representing 27 states received grants totaling $988,050 to host big read celebrations between september 2011 and june 2012. Each community focused on one of 31 featured books, which included such well-known titles as "the things they carried" by tim o'brien, "the great gatsby" by f. Scott fitzgerald, "the call of the wild" by jack london, and "the stories and poems of edgar allan poe."
Activity 3
Learning initiativesarts midwest also manages several special projects funded by private foundations. The arts learning xchange is a four-year program designed to foster growth in public arts attendance and to identify, develop, and share useful lessons to help arts organizations reach more people. Funded by the wallace foundation and in collaboration with minnesota community foundation, arts learning xchange brings experts in audience engagement to the twin cities for public presentations, provides advanced training and grants to selected organizations, and offers opportunities for twin cities arts leaders to attend a national conference on arts marketing and participation. Artslab strengthens the impact of arts organizations in urban and rural communities through leadership and strategy development. Over a two-year period, artslab provides intensive training, mentorship, and technical assistance to cultural leaders in the midwest-strengthening nonprofit arts organizations in the minneapolis/st. Paul metro area, western minnesota, and north and south dakota. Artslab is rooted in the belief that the arts are essential to a midwest filled with vibrant communities, competitive industries, and strong economies. Artslab is supported by the bush foundation, f. R. Bigelow foundation, mardag foundation, the mcknight foundation, the saint paul foundation, and united arts fund.
