Detailed minutes of board or committee meetings are maintained to document all such situations.”

THE BIG READ SUPPORTS ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN DEVELOPING COMMUNITY-WIDE READING PROGRAMS WHICH ENCOURAGE READING AND PARTICIPATION BY DIVERSE AUDIENCES. ORGANIZATIONS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BIG READ RECEIVE A GRANT, ACCESS TO ONLINE TRAINING RESOURCES AND OPPORTUNITIES, AND EDUCATIONAL AND PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT WIDESPREAD COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT. EACH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT LASTS APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH AND INCLUDES A KICK-OFF CELEBRATION TO LAUNCH THE PROGRAM LOCALLY; MAJOR EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES DEVOTED SPECIFICALLY TO THE BOOK (E.G., PANEL DISCUSSIONS, AUTHOR READINGS, ETC.); EVENTS USING THE BOOK AS A POINT OF DEPARTURE (E.G., FILM SCREENINGS, THEATRICAL READINGS); AND BOOK DISCUSSIONS IN DIVERSE LOCATIONS AND AIMED AT A WIDE RANGE OF AUDIENCES. IN 2013-2014, 77 NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS (INCLUDING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, MUSEUMS, UNIVERSITIES, AND LIBRARIES) AND MUNICIPALITIES REPRESENTING 33 STATES RECEIVED GRANTS TOTALING $1,000,000 TO HOST BIG READ PROGRAMS BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 2013 AND JUNE 2014. EACH COMMUNITY FOCUSED ON ONE OF 34 FEATURED BOOKS, WHICH INCLUDED SUCH WELL-KNOWN TITLES AS "THE THINGS THEY CARRIED" BY TIM O'BRIEN, "THE GREAT GATSBY" BY F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, "THE CALL OF THE WILD" BY JACK LONDON, AND THE STORIES AND POEMS OF EDGAR ALLAN POE. |
