Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Arts Midwest works collaboratively with private and public arts supporters throughout Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and the Native nations that share that geography. (See continuation on Schedule O)(Continuation from part III) . It supports, informs, and celebrates arts organizations and creative communities across the Midwest. Its mission is to build unprecedented opportunity across the Midwest by advancing creativity. Its vision is that Midwestern creativity powers thriving, entrepreneurial, and welcoming communities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
LITERARY ARTSThe third of three programs that Arts Midwest manages for the National Endowment for the Arts is The Big Read, which is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture by supporting community-wide reading programs throughout the U.S. This national program provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. The initiative includes innovative reading programs in selected cities and towns, comprehensive resources for discussing classic literature and an extensive Web site providing comprehensive information on authors and their works. Each community event lasts approximately one month and includes a kick-off event to launch the program locally, ideally attended by the mayor and other local luminaries; major events devoted specifically to the book (panel discussions, author reading, and the like); events using the book as a point of departure (film screenings, theatrical readings, and so forth); and book discussions in diverse locations and aimed at a wide range of audiences. In 2009-2010, 267 nonprofits, including arts, culture, and science organizations; libraries; and municipalities received grants totaling $3.7 million to host Big Read celebrations between September 2009 and June 2010. The 2009-2010 Big Read grantees represent 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each community focused on one of 31 featured books, which included such well-known titles as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Call of the Wild by Jack London, and A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.Arts Midwest continues to manage The Big Read Egypt/U.S., a collaborative Global Cultural Initiative project of the U.S. Department of State and the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. It is designed to deepen cultural understanding and dialogue between Egyptians and Americans through the transformative power of literature.
Activity 3
SPECIAL PROJECTSArts Midwest also manages several special projects funded by private foundations. The Arts Learning Xchange is a four-year program designed to foster growth in public arts attendance and to identify, develop, and share useful lessons to help arts organizations reach more people. Funded by The Wallace Foundation and in collaboration with Minnesota Community Foundation, arts learning Xchange brings experts in audience participation to the Twin Cities for public presentations, provides advanced training and grants to selected organizations, and will offer opportunities for Twin Cities arts leaders to attend a national conference on arts marketing and participation. ArtsLab is a three-year capacity-building program whose purpose is to strengthen smaller arts organizations in Minnesota through an in-depth organizational assessment process, quarterly peer learning gatherings, one-on-one consultative support, distance learning, and modest operational support grants. The program has two peer groups - one in Minneapolis/St. Paul, one in rural Minnesota - of eight nonprofit arts organizations each that learn together, share best practices, and receive support to strengthen their organizational infrastructure. ArtsLab is funded by the Bush Foundation, F. R. Bigelow Foundation, Mardag Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, and The Saint Paul Foundation.Arts Midwest also began planning, in collaboration with our fellow Regional Arts Organizations, for a program for Americans to experience the diverse artistic expressions and cultures of Muslim societies. Funded through a planning grant from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, we began envisioning a series of community-based, cross-sector cultural engagement programs that featuring art and artists from the world's diverse Muslim cultures that will 1) introduce to American audiences some of the most exciting and dynamic artists from the Muslim world, 2) enhance Americans' knowledge of the diverse cultures present in today's Muslim societies, and 3) advance mutual understanding among all program participants and audiences.

IRS990/Description0PERFORMING ARTSArts Midwest World Fest, our global education and outreach performing arts initiative, began its new two year cycle by bringing four unique musical ensembles to communities throughout the Midwest. Israeli Ethnic Ensemble from Israel, Beauty and Melody from the Sichuan province of China, Agatsuma from Japan, and Mauvais Sort from Canada each conducted weeklong residencies in 9 selected Midwest communities. These residencies included low-cost public concerts; free school concerts; workshops with elementary, middle, and high school students; and community outreach activities that range from family workshops in public libraries, to master classes with local musicians, to community-hosted dinners with the ensembles. The program provided arts enrichment while inspiring multicultural outreach, awareness, and appreciation. Targeting Midwest communities that often lack opportunities for international arts experiences, the 2009-2011 Arts Midwest World Fest partnered with the communities of Alexandria, MN; Aberdeen, SD; Valley City, ND; Hartford, WI; Knoxville, IA; Bloomington, IL; Sandusky, OH; Marquette, MI; and Terre Haute, IN.This program typically reaches over 23,000 adults and 92,000 children in its two-year cycle, through a multitude of performances and educational activities.Arts Midwest convened the 23rd annual Midwest Arts Conference in St. Paul, MN from September 9-12, 2009, and brought together more than 900 arts presenters, artist managers/agents, artists, and other performing arts and service professionals, representing more than 500 organizations. The annual Midwest Arts Conference, one of the largest booking and educational conferences for the performing arts in the United States, provides a productive environment to facilitate touring of the performing arts. Each year, hundreds of performing artists, artist managers/agents, performing arts presenters, and service organization representatives gather at the Conference to conduct business in the Marketplace exhibit hall, to experience unique showcases by a diverse range of artists and disciplines, to learn from in-depth professional development sessions, to network and reconnect with colleagues, to revitalize professional energies, and to gain new insights into the world of performing arts touring and presenting. The only meeting of its kind in the Midwest, the Conference is managed by Arts Midwest and serves the 15-state region of Arts Midwest and Mid-America Arts Alliance.Arts Midwest's Performing Arts Fund helps performing arts presenters reach their audiences in rural and underserved towns and cities across the heartland. Since July 1, 2009, Arts Midwest supported 223 engagements in our region with $609,551 in grants through the Performing Arts Fund. These engagements featured more than 353 performances and 1,187 in-depth educational activities. An increased level of support was granted to organizations who presented professional performing artists/ensembles residing in Arts Midwests region. During this cycle, 70 engagements featured performing artists from the Midwest.Arts Midwest's expertise continues to be recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, which has entrusted the organization with the development and on-going management of three major NEA programs, including Shakespeare in American Communities, supporting theater companies in bringing professional productions of Shakespeare to high school and middle school students across the country; and NEA Jazz Masters Live, presenting highly-esteemed NEA Jazz Masters to audiences across the country.

IRS990/MissionDescription0Arts Midwest connects people throughout the Midwest and the world to meaningful arts opportunities, sharing creativity, knowledge, and understanding across boundaries. Our vision is that people in communities we serve will find joy, meaning, and beauty in their lives through the arts. To those ends, cultural programs initiated by Arts Midwest - including performances by high-quality theater, dance, and music ensembles; educational arts activities; museum exhibitions; and conferences - reach close to a million people annually, enhancing the quality of life in hundreds of cities, towns, and rural areas across the Midwest.
