Activity 2

Minnesota Opera is committed to the education of both current and future artists, audiences and persons interested in the operatic art form. The Opera's education and outreach efforts included adult education classes; cOPERAtion!, an in-school residency program that places resident artists and a teaching artist in secondary and elementary schools; Day at the Opera, which provides secondary students the ability to spend time with members of the Opera's staff and performing artists; and a season-long singing internship for selected high school apprentices. For school instructors, the Opera has developed opera boxes, opera title-specific collections of materials designed to prepare students to attend a student matinee (an open final dress rehearsal especially for students) or a regular performance. A web-based version of the opera box can also be found on the new education website IMAGINEOPERA.ORG. The Opera created The Opera Academy, a new teacher workshop designed for instructors of any discipline to learn opera pedagogy while earning graduate credit. Each season, a compact disc of musical highlights with narration explaining history and plot of the current seasons' productions is created for both established and new opera listeners. We also present a series of adult education classes for the public to learn about each production prior to opening, as well as "Opera Insights", a free, pre-performance lecture open to the audience one hour before each performance. Project Opera, a youth choral experience for students in grades 4 - 12, performed throughout the school year which culminated in a staged operatic scenes on the Ordway stage as well as appearing in Minnesota Opera's production of La Boheme. The Opera created an opera themed summer day camp for high school students to promote interest in the art form.

Activity 3

Minnesota Opera's resident artist program is committed to training new professionals in the field of opera. The Opera provided six singers, two opera coaches/pianists, one stage director, one conductor and one stage manager nine months of professional development during the initial stages of their careers. This included vocal training and coaching, stage time, movement and language classes and career counseling. These artists were an integral part of the company's outreach and education efforts and demonstrated the art form throughout the community including schools, festivals and various outreach events.
