Activity 2

Graduate Instruction. Delivered 6,838 graduate student credit hours of instruction (one student credit hour represents 10 hours of instruction for one student). Awarded 130 Master's degrees in 7 different programs.

Activity 3

Research. Includes expenditures for grant for construction and occupancy of a 9,000 square foot multi-tenant laboratory building to support scientific and technology based start-up companies; expenditures for Agent Fate Appropriate Response Operations Tool (AFAROT) -a model/tool that affords the user the probabilities and risks associated with chemical and biological contamination event, and recommends the most appropriate response to mitigate the hazard. The AFAROT consist of 1) The completion of on-going research in agent/substrate transport/interaction models, 2) Integration of completed agent/substrate models with deposition, dispersion, toxicity, and response components of the overall tool, 3) Development and completion of a biological reaerosolization model for integration into the overall tool, and 4) Development and completion of a TIC/TIM (Toxic Industrial Chemicals and Toxic Industrial Materials) model for integration into the overall tool. During the last year the following elements of the program have been developed: * Computational model development is near completion * Validation of the model for HD on sand, VX on concrete, and evaporation of nerve agents through porous substrates have been completed * Open air data for TIC/TIM (like malathion) was acquired and compiled * The validation of the model with open air data for TIC/TIM is on-going * An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) program was developed and currently we are populating the training data * The problem of chemical reaction of agents with water (moist substrate or a rain event) was successfully solved for several cases (VX and malathion). * The results were presented to DTRA (Defense Threat Reduction Agency) and ECBC (Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center) in forms of reports, journal, and at CBD (Chemical and Biological Conference); and expenditures for Center of Energy Excellence-The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and its subcontractor, Kettering University, coordinated with the Swedish Biogas International and the City of Flint to improve the availability, quality, and application of the biogas generated at the Waste Water Treatment Plant through applied research and development projects. In addition, research projects in the area of feasibility, and biogas use in transportation and power generation applications in Michigan were conducted. This was accomplished by converting a vehicle to bi-fuel (gasoline and CNG) and testing this vehicle for performance, fuel economy and emissions. Biogas was used to produce electricity by utilizing a Stirling engine and a high-temperature fuel cell. Test results include efficiency, power output and emissions.
