Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Founded in 2011, next generation promotes solutions to two of the biggest challenges confronting the next generation of americans: the risk of dangerous climate change, and the threat of diminished prospects for children and families. Through the use of non-partisan research, policy development, and strategic communications, we identify strategies that help deploy clean, advanced energy technologies; we also work to ensure a level playing field from which today's kids can build a brighter future.

Through nonpartisan research, policy development and strategic communications, the center works to shape national dialogue around two major challenges that affect the prospects of america's next generation - advancing a sustainable energy future and improving opportunities for children and families.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The internal revenue service has determined that next generation is exempt from federal income taxes under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3) and by the franchise tax board under section 23701(d) of the california revenue and taxation code. As a result, next generation is exempt from paying income taxes, and thus no provision for income taxes has been reflected in these financial statements. However, income from certain activities not directly related to next generation's tax-exempt purpose may be subject to taxation as unrelated business income. Next generation's federal and state returns are open to examination for a period of up to 3 and 4 years, respectively, with only the initial two returns since inception of operations open for 2011 and 2012. Next generation follows the guidance for uncertain tax positions. Management has concluded there are no uncertain tax positions at december 31, 2013.

IRS990/Desc0NEXT GENERATION'S ENERGY & CLIMATE PROGRAM IS PUSHING CALIFORNIA-AND THE NATION-TO ACT ON CLIMATE, FOCUSING ON THREE MAJOR POLICY ISSUES AND PROJECTS: (1) IMPLEMENTING PROPOSITION 39 - THE CLEAN ENERGY JOBS ACT OF 2012: IN NOVEMBER 2012, CALIFORNIA VOTERS PASSED PROP 39, CLOSING A CORPORATE TAX LOOPHOLE THAT WILL RAISE AN EXPECTED $1.1 BILLION PER YEAR FOR THE STATE. FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, HALF OF THAT MONEY WILL GO TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CLEAN ENERGY PROJECTS IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS, INCLUDING SCHOOLS. HOWEVER, THE PROPOSITION LEFT NUMEROUS CORE COMPONENTS OF THE LAW TO BE DECIDED IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE. NEXT GENERATION PROVIDES EXPERT COMMENTARY AND POLICY ANALYSIS ON PROPOSITION 39 IMPLEMENTATION. (2) NEXT STEPS ON AB32, CALIFORNIA'S LANDMARK CLIMATE LAW: CALIFORNIA'S GLOBAL WARMING SOLUTIONS ACT (ALSO KNOWN AS AB32), WHICH PASSED IN 2006, ESTABLISHED THE STATE'S CAP AND TRADE PROGRAM ALONG WITH A SUITE OF OTHER POLICIES INTENDED TO DRASTICALLY REDUCE OUR CARBON EMISSIONS BY 2020. EACH WEEK, NEXT GENERATION ROUNDS UP THE NEWS AND LEGISLATIVE UPDATES ON THESE POLICIES AND MORE IN THE CALIFORNIA ENERGY & CLIMATE NEWS. (3) MOVING THE CLIMATE DEBATE FORWARD -- A CAMPAIGN ABOUT THE ECONOMIC COSTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE: OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, WE HAVE SEEN A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN OUR SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND SEVERAL OF ITS KEY IMPACTS. RECENT EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS, INCLUDING SUPERSTORM SANDY'S DEVASTATING IMPACT IN THE NORTHEAST, DROUGHTS IN THE MIDWEST AND WILDFIRES IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS, ARE ALSO INCREASING AMERICANS' AWARENESS OF AND CONCERN WITH THE POTENTIAL RISKS OF A CHANGING CLIMATE. YET WE STILL KNOW RELATIVELY LITTLE ABOUT THE ECONOMIC COST OF THE POSSIBLE CLIMATE FUTURES THAT WE NOW FACE. GIVEN THE POTENTIAL MAGNITUDE OF THESE IMPACTS, WE MUST BETTER UNDERSTAND THESE RISKS, AND SOON. NEXT GENERATION, IN CONJUNCTION WITH A TEAM OF ECONOMISTS, CLIMATE EXPERTS, AND OTHER RESEARCHERS, IS UNDERTAKING A LANDMARK STUDY ON THE ECONOMIC COSTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, TO BE RELEASED IN MID-2014.

IRS990/MissionDesc0FOUNDED IN 2011, NEXT GENERATION PROMOTES SOLUTIONS TO TWO OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES CONFRONTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF AMERICANS: THE RISK OF DANGEROUS CLIMATE CHANGE, AND THE THREAT OF DIMINISHED PROSPECTS FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. THROUGH THE USE OF NON-PARTISAN RESEARCH, POLICY DEVELOPMENT, AND STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS, WE IDENTIFY STRATEGIES THAT HELP DEPLOY CLEAN, ADVANCED ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES; WE ALSO WORK TO ENSURE A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FROM WHICH TODAY'S KIDS CAN BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE.NEXT GENERATION TAKES LESSONS LEARNED FROM CALIFORNIA, AMERICA'S LARGEST, MOST POPULOUS STATE, AND HELPS SPREAD INNOVATIVE IDEAS THAT CAN BE ENACTED THROUGH PUBLIC POLICY, PRIVATE ENTERPRISE, FAMILIES, AND INDIVIDUALS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0NEXT GENERATION'S CHILDREN & FAMILIES PROGRAM PROMOTES PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND PERSONAL ACTIONS TO IMPROVE THE PROSPECTS OF AMERICA'S NEXT GENERATION. OUR CURRENT WORK IS FOCUSED IN TWO AREAS: (1) TOO SMALL TO FAIL: NEXT GENERATION HAS JOINED FORCES WITH THE BILL, HILLARY & CHELSEA CLINTON FOUNDATION TO LAUNCH "TOO SMALL TO FAIL," AN INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN AGES ZERO TO FIVE. "TOO SMALL TO FAIL" AIMS TO HELP PARENTS AND BUSINESSES TAKE MEANINGFUL ACTIONS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN AGES ZERO TO FIVE, SO THAT MORE OF AMERICA'S CHILDREN ARE PREPARED TO SUCCEED IN THE 21ST CENTURY. AS WE DO THIS WORK AND SECURE COMMITMENTS TO ACTION, WE WILL USE SOCIAL MEDIA, OTHER TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN TOOLS AND INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO INFORM AND EMPOWER PARENTS AND BUSINESS LEADERS TO TRACK THEIR PROGRESS AND MEASURE THEIR SUCCESS. (2) CALIFORNIA LEADING: CALIFORNIA - WITH ALL OF ITS DIVERSITY, PARTICULARLY AMONG OUR CHILDREN - OFFERS THE RICHNESS AND CHALLENGES THAT THE REST OF AMERICA WILL SOON EXPERIENCE. OUR WORK IN CALIFORNIA IS FOCUSED ON UNDERSTANDING AND ALLEVIATING THE IMPACTS OF CHILDHOOD POVERTY; ANALYZING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT; AND SUPPORTING WORKING FAMILIES BY FRAMING THE IMPORTANCE OF LABOR PROTECTIONS AND PROMOTING SOLUTIONS THAT WORK FOR PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN.
