Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) promotes biodiversity conservation by enabling people, gorillas and other wildlife to coexist through improving their health and community livelihoods in and around Africa's protected areas. CTPH has three integrated programs: wildlife health and conservation, community health, and alternative livelihoods implemented through service delivery, education and behavior change communication, research, advocacy, social enterprises and information, communication, and technology (ICT). CTPH champions a "One Health" and conservation or integrated Population, Health and Environment (PHE) approach that addresses human, animal, and ecosystem health together. CTPH's work primarily focuses on critically endangered gorillas at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and other protected areas in Africa where gorillas naturally occur. We also train and advocate for other organizations to adopt our One Health model in savannah and mountain ecosystems in Uganda.

IRS990/Desc0WILDLIFE HEALTH MONITORING: We completed building the second block of our Gorilla Health and Community Conservation Centre with additional funding from Tusk Trust. This included a higher biosecurity laboratory for comparative cross-species disease investigations through histopathology and bacteriology for bacterial cultures; and space for treatments and necropsies. With support from the Rare Species Fund, we bought laboratory equipment, supplies, benches, and laboratory stools. With support from Tusk Trust, Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (Bird Life International), Wildlife Conservation Network, Cotswold Wildlife Park, National Geographic and Zoo Victoria, we analyzed over 831 gorilla fecal samples for comparative pathogen analysis with 103 livestock and 146 human fecal samples. National Geographic funded CTPH's participation in the Bwindi gorilla census. With support from National Geographic and the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund, we trained 163 park staff in a ranger's refresher training workshop in gorilla health monitoring and management of tourists during visits to the gorillas.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) promotes biodiversity conservation by enabling people, wildlife and livestock to coexist through improving their health and livelihoods in and around Africa's protected areas. CTPH has three integrated programs: wildlife health and conservation, community health and alternative livelihoods implemented through service delivery, education and behavior change communication, research, advocacy, social enterprises and information, communication and technology (ICT). CTPH champions a "One Health" and conservation or integrated Population, Health and Environment (PHE) approach that addresses human, animal and ecosystem health together. CTPH's work primarily focuses on critically endangered gorillas at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and other protected areas in Africa where gorillas naturally occur. We also train and advocate for other organizations to adopt our One Health model in savannah and mountain ecosystems in Uganda and other countries.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY HEALTH AND CONSERVATION: We provided support to strengthen and expand VHCT networks with funding from Global Development Network, National Geographic, Primate Conservation Inc, Tusk Trust, Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (Bird Life International) and Disney Conservation Fund. We expanded the program to a sixth frontline parish in Mpungu subcounty, around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where we facilitated the formation of more VHCTs, and trained 50 new VHCTs from Mpungu and Buremba parishes in collecting data in community health, gorilla and forest conservation and provided more livestock to sustain their volunteer efforts through group income-generating projects. We increased the number of Village Health and Conservation Teams (VHCTs) at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from 84 to 270, to reduce the number of homes each of them visits enabling them to visit each home more frequently and achieve the desired behavior change in a shorter time. The 270 VHCTs are able to reach over 6,000 homes in six parishes where there is high human and gorilla conflict within Kanungu and Kisoro districts, around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. We strengthened the data collection tool by giving each VHCT a predesigned book with a page for each household and simplified it to more easily track the performance of VHCTs and their ability to bring about desired behavior change in the homes under their responsibility. We provided ongoing support to 86 VHCTs at Mount Elgon National Park working closely with Uganda Wildlife Authority and Bukwo, Kween and Bulambuli District local governments. We facilitated the formation of 19 VHCTs through training all the already established Village Health Teams in Kasenene parish at Budongo Forest Reserve, home to endangered chimpanzees through a partnership with Jane Goodall Institute - Uganda and Budongo Conservation Field Station and working closely with Masindi District local government. All VHCTs received group livestock projects and were trained in managing Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLAs). We conducted household baseline surveys to 1,348 homes in two parishes within the Mpungu sub-county in Bwindi, 1,400 homes in one parish at Budongo Forest Reserve and 1,500 homes in five parishes within three districts at Mount Elgon National Park.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SOCIAL IMPACT EVALUATION OF CTPH MODEL: We implemented the third year of a research to policy project funded by the Darwin Initiative, together with Oxford University, International Institute of Environment and Development (IIED), Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) entitled "Can Health Investments Benefit Conservation and Sustainable Development?" Recommendations from the research started to be used to strengthen CTPH programs at Bwindi and to scale the model to Budongo Forest with JGI taking the lead and to Mount Elgon National Park with UWA taking the lead. CTPH was project lead responsible for project implementation and developing Theories of Change at scale up sites. Oxford University was leading social impact evaluation, comparing treatment and control sites at Bwindi. IIED was leading research to policy engagement. A mid-term workshop was held with project implementers to review research findings where additional research was recommended, some of which were conducted by the same team. Additional action-oriented research measuring the ability of the VHCT model to bring about behavior change as a self-evaluation of this component of the CTPH model was conducted with funding from the Mulago Foundation
