Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

Pi beta phi fraternity has an audit committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of an independent accountant. The audit committee participated in the planning of the audit, were updated throughout the audit and participated in a wrap up call with the auditors at the completion of the audit. This process did not change from prior years.

Financial Statement Notes

PART IV, LINE 2B:

The fraternity constitution states that if a charter is relinquished by a chapter, withdrawn by the fraternity or if college or university authorities disband women's fraternities on campus, the chapter house corporation and the chapter shall, following payment of their debts and liabilities, transfer net assets of the chapter house corporation and chapter to the fraternity. If the chapter is later re-chartered, an amount equal to the net proceeds transferred to the fraternity shall be provided to such chapter house corporation and chapter to assist in reestablishment of the chapter. After 20 years, if re-chartering has not occurred, the amounts held shall revert to the fraternity.

PART V, LINE 4:

Pursuant to the terms of the trust, the endowment is a restricted gift to be invested with interest used to support the scholarship award that is given to outstanding alumnae.

PART X, LINE 2:

The fraternity and fhc are exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(a) as an organization described in section 501(c)(7) of the internal revenue code ("irc"). As such, they are only subject to tax on unrelated business taxable income ("ubti") as defined by the irc. The fraternity and fhc each file form 990 (return of organization exempt from income tax) with the u.s. Federal government. The organization follows the fasb asc topic 740-10, accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which prescribes a comprehensive model for how an organization should measure, recognize, present and disclose in its consolidated financial statements uncertain tax positions that an organization has taken or expects to take on a tax return. Management annually reviews its tax positions and has determined that there are no material uncertain tax positions that require recognition in the consolidated financial statements as of june 30, 2021 and 2020.
