Activity 2

Turnaround Schools - AUSL turns around chronically failing Chicago public schools through a disciplined transformation process built on a foundation of staffing the school with a critical mass of specially trained AUSL teachers. The Board of Education of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) selects failing schools in need of critical transformation and contracts with AUSL to manage the turnaround process on their behalf. To lead the transformation process AUSL recommends a principal for CPS to hire. AUSL plays a pivotal role in supporting the principal in bringing on a team of teachers, many of whom are graduates of AUSL's teacher training program as well as providing new curriculum, after schools programs and other critical resources to the school which directly impact school improvement and student success. AUSL turnaround schools offer students and their families a new start after years, even decades of chronic failure. The new school leadership team and highly qualified staff bring the talent, resources and belief in students' abilities needed to get the school back on track. A new climate and culture of success at the school is based on high expectations for student achievement and the belief that all children can learn. In 2011-12, AUSL served almost 7,000 students in 12 schools. Overall, the CPS schools turned around by AUSL have demonstrated consistent yearly improvement in state testing standards which far exceed other CPS high poverty, high needs schools.

Activity 3

Advisory services - AUSL believes in sharing the expertise and experience of improving the performance of chronically failing schools with other public school districts within the United States. Through the advisory services, AUSL offers the tools, framework, and coaching for transformative teacher development and school management. By sharing our expertise with schools outside of our network, we are supporting increases in the number of high-performing public schools in low-income communities and incorporating new ideas into the AUSL network of schools. Advisory services include: study tours of AUSL schools, in-person consultation with AUSL expert staff, professional development and coaching for teachers and school leaders, needs assessment and improvement plan consulting, intensive onsite technical assistance, and implementation support.
