Activity 2

National board certification for educational leaderssince 2000, the fund's support of national board certified teachers (nbct) has increased the number of nbcts in chicago public schools from 11 to more than 1,800. More than 80,000 chicago students are being taught by nbc teachers and three-quarters of schools with nbc teachers are 85 percent or more low income. Analyses found that the vast majority of nbc teachers in chicago have more students performing and trending well when compared to other veteran cps teachers. To expand a similar focus to principals, the fund made an investment in national board for professional teaching standards (nbpts), which manages nbc, to create a national certification for principals, national board certification for educational leaders (nbcel). The certification process is a comprehensive professional development opportunity, comprised of a series of assignments that assess accomplished principal practices with a focus on student achievement and school effectiveness. Throughout the last year, the fund worked with nbpts on the nbcel field test that included 256 participating principals - 17 from cps and 28 from illinois.

Activity 3

Teacher selection toolthe fund seeded and led the customization for cps's first online fit assessment for teacher applicants, which will allow cps to identify those most likely to be successful in chicago's urban teaching environment and feed those candidates to principals for hiring.
