Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Professional Learning Groups Schools That Can works with cohorts of educators from across our local networks of K-12 schools through Professional Learning Groups. Over the course of a year, these cohorts meet together to work though structured cycles of inquiry and improvement in order to tackle challenges and develop solutions that integrate more real-world learning into their schools. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: National Convenings Schools That Can annually coordinates two national convenings each year to bring together the larger community around Real-World Learning (RWL) topics. The Transforming Learning Collaborative is a partnership initiative that enables schools to learn directly from peers leading in RWL practices. Schools come together three times throughout the year and receive ongoing coaching and support from a mentor who is a current school leader. The National Forum is an annual public conference hosted by a different STC city each year. The Forum includes panels, speakers, and workshops on a relevant theme. The Forum also includes our Robert F. Kennedy Urban Education Awards Luncheon. The 2020 Forum was to be held in New York City in May but was adapted into an online conference.

Depending on the schools needs, we may help them identify curricula, develop hands-on learning activities, incorporate an emphasis on cross-career competencies, and/or create real-world learning opportunities through mentorships, guest speakers, and internships. We also help students learn about career pathways and build professional skills through our Bridging the Education to Employment (e2e) Gap program that connects students to local professionals and companies for career workshops and externships.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Other Programs In addition to STCs signature programs and convenings, STC runs several local initiatives, many in collaboration with partners. For instance, STC facilitates Professional Learning Groups (PLGs) that support cohorts of educators through improvement and inquiry cycles. Additionally, STC partners with local companies and organizations to spread real-world learning and to connect education to employment. As an example, in partnership with Prudential, STC Newark helps to coordinate service learning activities for students across the city and also helps connect high schools to math professors and actuaries to showcase math in the real world.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Building Real-World Learning Schools That Can works with teachers and students in K-8 schools to bring powerful real-world learning programming to our schools, empowering students to drive their own learning while developing social-emotional and technical skills that will help them pursue their passions in high school and beyond. Our most robust program within this area is our STEM Maker Fellows Program, through which we provide training, curriculum, and support to teachers to facilitate makerspaces in their schools. Additionally, we host community events like the annual Design Day Challenge for middle school students and pop-up makerspaces.
