Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Easterseals is leading the way to full equity, inclusion, and access for people with disabilities, families, and communities through life-changing services and powerful advocacy that enrich education, enhance health, expand employment, and elevate communities so that people with disabilities, including veterans and seniors, can fully participate in society. For more than 100 years, we have worked tirelessly with our partners to enhance quality of life and expand local access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Through our national network of Affiliates, we provide essential services and on-the-ground supports to more than 1.5 million people each year including early childhood programs for the critical first five years, autism services, medical rehabilitation and employment programs, veterans services, and more. Our public education, policy, and advocacy initiatives positively shape perceptions and address the urgent needs of Americans with disabilities today.

The National Center for Senior Transportation is a major national resource, charged with education and creating greater awareness of the issues around and the need for accessible and available senior transportation in our nation. The National Center for Senior Transportation (NCST) has gained prominence as the "go to" organization for information on transportation options for older adults. Its student scholars and community grant programs have helped garner best practices and success stories that provide tangible and actionable information and help communities better serve the mobility needs of seniors. The NCST's work to build bridges with the gerontology and public health community has led to strong partnerships that now include the Centers for Disease Control and the American Medical Association - a collaboration to further the understanding between access to transportation and the health/wellness of older adults. The NCST led the way in diversity outreach, holding coalition building meetings that further understanding of the many barriers that elders from multi-cultural and multi-lingual communities face. IRS990/Description0Easter Seals Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a work-based community service program for older workers, and has been funded by the Department of Labor (DOL). Authorized by the Older American Act, the program provides subsidized, service-based training for low-income persons 55 or older, who are unemployed with poor employment prospects. SCSEP's mission is to promote economic self-sufficiency for older individuals working to achieve this goal. Program participants train and work at community nonprofits and government agencies, gaining skills to prepare them for employment. In addition, Easter Seals provides program participants training to help them become job-ready; this can include resume workshops, interview workshops, job search assistance, and other supports to be job-ready.Easter Seals has nine affiliates working as sub-recipients of SCSEP; they served over 4,000 participants during fiscal year 2010 and successfully served many participants who were "most in need," as defined by the DOL. Participants included more than 300 over the age of 70; over 1,000 were homeless or at-risk of homelessness; over 650 participants had a disability; and over 570 participants had limited English proficiency. More than 400 participants exited the program during the year for paid employment, made possible through their participation in the SCSEP.During this same period, Easter Seals SCSEP participants provided over 2.4 million hours of community service hours to community and government agencies through their training assignments. These community service hours greatly benefit local communities in addition to training SCSEP participants. As the only national grantee with a Participant Advisory Council (PAC), the DOL noted in a recent review that this is a "positive practice, worthy of acknowledgement." The PAC is composed of a small group of energetic and dynamic participants from each recipient SCSEP. The PAC's intent is to provide support for SCSEP through the community, participants, and the workplace.
