Mission and Program Overview

Mission

As an association of business members, the greater cleveland partnership (gcp) mobilizes private-sector leadership, expertise, and resources to create jobs and leverage investment to improve the economic vitality of the region.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Advocacy: the northeast ohio business community has a tremendous advocate in the greater cleveland partnership. With our network of partners, we speak with one voice when it comes to what is best for business, the economy and job creation in the region. This enables us to communicate the business community's strategic priorities to elected officials and public-sector leaders to help them marshal the resources needed to most current challenges and improve the long-term outlook of the region's economy. The gcp worked with nine ohio metropolitan chambers of commerce to produce the "redesigning ohio" report that recommended sweeping changes designed to help the state improve economic performance and reduce costs. When discussions were under way in washington to enact new taxes on airlines and their customers, the gcp weighed in with lawmakers to make the case that new taxes would have a serious impact on united's ability to continue to offer competitive services at hopkins international airport (cle) and to our region. The gcp is a member of the great lakes metro chambers coalition to advocate for issues impacting the great lakes region. The gcp led efforts to create a broad-based coalition to secure education reform legislation in the ohio general assembly that would allow for the implementation of the mayor's education transformation plan. Legislation was passed in june and signed by the governor in july, setting the stage for a campaign to secure a school tax levy that will be on the ballot in november. The gcp will continue working to maintain the viability of the nasa glenn research center and plum brook station and seek opportunities that leverage these assets to advance the mission of the agency, economic development and new and emerging industries. Nasa glenn is an economic development engine for the region and the entire state and retention of its skilled and highly educated workforce must be a top priority. The ohio department of transportation asked regional chambers to organize stakeholders to provide information aimed at generating regional transportation plans. The gcp and its partner organizations responded with a unified voice. We support projects of regional significance, including the west shoreway, opportunity corridor, clifton boulevard transit enhancement, widening of i-271 and the state's examination of leasing the ohio turnpike.
Activity 3
Physical development: recognizing the importance of strategic collaboration among public, private, and non-profit organizations, gcp concentrates significant resources toward reinvestment in greater cleveland and northeast ohio. In 2011, the gcp was engaged with public- and private-sector leadership on advancing the first $90 million of priority projects that will connect our water front to our center city and its unique neighborhood districts. Gcp's real estate investment affiliate, cleveland development advisors (cda) provided a key financing component to support the combined, innovative efforts of playhouse square, the cleveland playhouse and cleveland state university in their creation of an arts education collaborative unlike any other in the nation. The collaboration resulted in an investment of over $85 million to renovate the historic allen theatre and to establish the new middough arts center in playhouse square. Cda also is using tax credits to leverage state and local funding to give a financing boost to two corporate headquarter projects. Cda will enhance the financing plan to redevelop the 23-story former keybank center and help construct a new headquarters for marcus thomas, an integrated marketing communications agency than plans to increase its employee count by more than 25 percent within the next three years. Construction began in late 2010 on the $275 million first-phase of the flats eastbank project. In november 2011, the project achieved another major milestone as crews began erecting the structural steel framework of its state-of-the-art, 18-story waterfront office tower. Construction of the office tower is on schedule, moving toward a completion date in spring 2013. In 2011, three gcp priority transportation projects continued to move forward: the cleveland inner belt modernization plan, including the new $287 million westbound i-90 inner belt bridge; phase one of the west shoreway project; and the opportunity corridor, which will connect university circle and surrounding neighborhoods to i-490.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0ADVOCACY: THE NORTHEAST OHIO BUSINESS COMMUNITY HAS A TREMENDOUS ADVOCATE IN THE GREATER CLEVELAND PARTNERSHIP.
IRS990/Activity2/Expense01972637
IRS990/Activity3/Description0PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT: RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF STRATEGIC COLLABORATION AMONG PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, GCP CONCENTRATES SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES TOWARD REINVESTMENT IN GREATER CLEVELAND AND NORTHEAST OHIO.
