The overall goal is to improve the children's physical education by providing instruction in physical fitness activities, healthy eating habits, and good nutrition, with an ultimate goal of creating lifelong healthier habits.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0America On Track continued to implement a Tobacco Prevention Project (an innovative, comprehensive, community-based program that is being implemented throughout Orange County - funded by the Orange County Health Care Agency) in the cities of Orange, Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Juan Capistrano, and Mission Viejo. The goal of the project is to lower youth access to tobacco. This is done by working with local tobacco retailers (274 in the 5 targeted cities) to educate them on the state laws that prohibit selling tobacco to minors. Results to date include: 1) Actively worked with 274 tobacco retailers and visited each of them three times throughout the year, for a total of 822 visits; 2) Conducted over 125 presentations to 1,074 parents, business and civic group members (and collected 1,074 pre surveys and 1,074 post surveys); 3) Helped 148 tobacco retailers achieve the status of "5 Star Merchant"; 4) Interacted with 1,546 community members during 12 community resource fairs; 5) Worked with 139 youth task force members; and 6) Increased by 113% the number of people who knew the correct fine of $200 for supplying tobacco to a minor.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0America On Track continued to implement our On Track for a Smoke-Free Santa Ana project (a 3-year initiative funded by the California Department of Public Health) and received a 2-year renewal. Our goal is to reduce Orange County residents' exposure to secondhand smoke by implementing the following 4 objectives over a 5-year period: 1) Help 20 Multi-Unit Housing complexes (apartments or condos) in Santa Ana adopt and implement written policies requiring all outdoor common areas and at least 50% of their individual units to be designated as smoke-free (including balconies and patios); 2) Work with the City of Santa Ana to adopt and implement a smoke-free parks policy; 3) Help 35 restaurants or coffee shops with outdoor dining areas adopt and implement a voluntary policy that designates the outdoor dining area as smoke-free by banning the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes and hookahs; and 4) Help 8 licensed residential child care centers adopt and implement a voluntary policy that designates the premises, inside and out, as smoke-free at all times. Results to date include: 1) The City of Santa Ana passed a Smoke-Free Parks ordinance in February 2012; 2) Thirty-eight restaurants have adopted voluntary smoke-free outdoor dining policies; 3) Twenty-one Multi-Unit Housing complexes have adopted voluntary 100% smoke-free policies, representing a total of 1,817 residential units; and 4) Thirty-six licensed residential child care facilities have adopted 100% smoke-free policies for their properties.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0America On Track's Emerging Leaders program is a unique, multi-faceted afterschool program designed to inspire today's youth to become tomorrow's leaders through a focus on the development of strong leadership and public speaking skills in order to help create a brighter future. It is a huge time commitment because it pairs outstanding teens with 4th through 6th grade students in a very structured afterschool program that requires weekly attendance from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm throughout the entire school year (30 sessions). America On Track staff members lead the program that provides the following components: Leadership Training, effective Public Speaking Skills Coaching, Training on How to Become a Successful Mentor, Social & Character Development, Nutrition Education, Music Appreciation as well as Fitness & Recreation, and much more. The teen leaders participate in the leadership process provided by America On Track, and their many talents and skills are incorporated into various components of the program. The teens receive intensive and ongoing training and are coached to assist in presenting lessons. It is a synergistic approach to developing future leaders. Our Emerging Leaders program is designed to benefit the teens and the elementary school students as well as our communities.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1America On Track continued its two highly customized, time-proven programs focused on children of prisoners which were launched in 2004: Brighter Futures for Children of Prisoners and Mentoring Children of Prisoners. These programs are designed to empower the most vulnerable high-risk youth in our society by providing them with opportunities for life-long success. America On Track is the only organization in Orange County, California specifically providing greatly needed comprehensive services to children of prisoners and their families. For 10 years, AOT has effectively worked with almost 5,000 mentors, mentees, and their families. Our Mentoring Component not only promotes education but also the importance of mentors who can inspire children of prisoners. AOT screens and carefully selects, trains and matches qualified adults with children of prisoners. Mentors are required to see their mentees 4 times per month and provide 8 hours of mentoring per month for a year or more. Our Brighter Futures for Children of Prisoners program compliments the mentoring program by adding another level of year-round comprehensive, innovative services such as STEM bi-monthly activities and "College Is For Me Too" summer camp, plus wrap-around services for these children and their families.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2In September of 2013, America On Track was awarded a 2-year grant (2013-2015) from the County of Orange Health Care Agency, Nutrition Services to provide direct nutrition education classes to adults and children who subsist below the federal poverty level in various key locations in Orange County.
