Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Serving more than 44,000 Orange County children and families each year, America On Track breaks the cycle of poverty, incarceration and hopelessness through long-term youth development, education and life-enhancing programs. America On Track (AOT), an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 1995 to fill identified service delivery gaps in the fields of human services, education, health & fitness, and tobacco & drug use prevention throughout Orange County. The mission of America On Track is to inspire Brighter Futures by building youth leaders, supporting families, and strengthening communities through life-transforming programs. Our vision is to create more vibrant communities by addressing social inequities and health disparities through evidence-based programs that focus on leadership development, mentoring, academic achievement, fitness & nutrition, and drug use prevention. Our motto is: Creating Brighter Futures for Communities & Youth since 1995!

Major Activities

Activity 2
America On Track continued to implement our On Track for a Smoke-Free Santa Ana project (a 3-year initiative funded by the California Tobacco Control Program). Our goal is to reduce Santa Ana residents' exposure to secondhand smoke by implementing the following 3 objectives: 1) Help 10 Multi-Unit Housing complexes (apartments or condos) in Santa Ana adopt and implement written policies requiring all outdoor common areas and at least 50% of their individual units to be designated as smoke-free (including balconies and patios); 2) Work with the City of Santa Ana to adopt and implement a smoke-free parks policy; and 3) Help 15 restaurants or coffee shops in Santa Ana city limits with outdoor dining areas adopt and implement a voluntary policy that designates the outdoor dining area as smoke-free by banning the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes and hookahs. Results to date include: 1) The City of Santa Ana passed a Smoke-Free Parks ordinance in February 2012!; 2) Sixteen (16) Restaurants have adopted voluntary smoke-free outdoor dining policies; and 3) Seven (7) Multi-Unit Housing complexes have adopted voluntary 100% smoke-free policies.
Activity 3
America On Track continued to implement its Mentoring Children of Prisoners program that matches highly-trained and screened adult mentors with children, ages 6-17, who have a parent who is incarcerated in a State or Federal prison, while also providing support for the entire family. Since August of 2004, the On Track Mentoring Children of Prisoners program itself has initiated over 800 mentor-mentee matches to date, which equates to working with well over 3,000 participants since we provide resources for the families (parents, guardians, siblings).

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0America On Track is an award-winning nonprofit organization with extensive experience in the fields of mentoring, violence & drug prevention, health & fitness, youth leadership development, and community collaboration. On Track's vision is to create a safer and more compassionate society by providing hope and opportunities, and promoting non-violence and respect for people of all cultures. The Mission of America On Track is to improve the social conditions of disadvantaged children and families in order to create health equity and social justice. This is done by providing them with a support system and life-transforming programs that focus on mentoring, youth asset building, academic enrichment, health and fitness, gang and drug prevention, and leadership.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Kids On Track Through Mentoring & Fitness is a multi-faceted 5-hour per week after school program that incorporates the following: tutoring & homework assistance, fitness & nutrition, character development, environmental awareness, music appreciation, drug prevention, leadership training, and special events. Kids On Track is a program that is provided in a nurturing, group setting at various school sites where On Track staff members and trained teen role models/mentors work synergistically with selected 4th, 5th, and 6th grade children. Within the group setting, each mentor is assigned a mentee, so technically, it is a one-on-one mentoring experience, yet interactive, fun and educational.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1Communities Empowering Youth: In 2007, On Track (as the lead agency) received a multi-year grant to build the capacity of the lead organization, its faith-based and community partners, and the resulting collaboration to promote positive youth development and to improve outcomes for youth at risk of gang involvement, youth violence, child abuse, and neglect (CEY's priority social service areas that define the program's targeted populations of at-risk youth). The goal of the project, which ended in 2011, was to strengthen a broad-based community collaboration that could better address the myriad issues that disadvantaged youth face. Thanks to the CEY project and funds, the capacity and performance of all three partners, including the lead agency, was enhanced in multiple ways including infrastructure improvements.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2Physical Education Program (PEP): In 2011, America On Track received another Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant to implement the On Track Through Fitness project, a comprehensive physical activity, health, and nutrition program to directly serve 2,500 K-12 students to help them meet State Standards. On Track Through Fitness was designed by incorporating multiple evidence-based model programs to serve disadvantaged Hispanic youth living in the most impoverished neighborhoods in Santa Ana, California. America On Track, with eight collaborative community partners, will address critical gaps as well as enhance health and fitness services at ten schools (six OCDE/ACCESS high schools and four private Catholic K - 8 schools). The overall goal is to improve the children's physical education by providing instruction in physical fitness activities, healthy eating habits, and good nutrition, with an ultimate goal of creating life-long healthier habits.

IRS990/Description0America On Track continued to implement a Tobacco Prevention Project (an innovative, comprehensive, community-based program that is being implemented throughout Orange County) in the North Region of Orange County and then expanded in July of 2011 to work in the cities of Orange, Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Juan Capistrano, and Mission Viejo. The goal of the project is to lower youth access to tobacco. This is done by working with local tobacco retailers (287 in North County and 272 in the 5 new cities) to educate them on the state laws that prohibit selling tobacco to minors. Additionally, numerous presentations were conducted with parent groups, business groups, and civic groups, as well as large-scale media campaigns, on State Access Laws, the 5 Star Merchant Program, and Lowering Youth Access to tobacco. In June 2011, On Track finished up a 3-year cycle in the North Region with great results: the number of tobacco retailers willing to sell tobacco to minors was reduced by 97%; 159 tobacco retailers achieved 5 Star Merchant status; the number of individuals demonstrating knowledge of the $200 fine for supplying tobacco to a minor was increased nearly five-fold.
