These attributes, we believe, are the oxygen of democratic self-government. Founded in 1988, fac acts locally, statewide and nationally.

FAC'S LAWSUIT AGAINST THE THE CITY OF MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA RESULTED IN RELEASE OF HUNDREDS OF PAGES OF DOCUMENTS ABOUT SERIOUS ALLEGED CONDUCT BY A FORMER CITY MANAGER--RECORDS THAT THE CITY MANAGER HAD SUED TO KEEP SECRET. FAC ALSO SETTLED A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES ON FAVORABLE TERMS, GETTING THE CITY TO AGREE TO PRESERVE ALL PUBLIC RECORDS FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS -- SOMETHING THE CITY WAS NOT PREVIOUSLY DOING, AS EXEMPLIFIED BY THE WIDELY COVERED AND WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION OF RECORDS FROM THE OFFICE OF COUNCILMEMBER TOM LABONGE UPON HIS DEPARTURE FROM OFFICE. THE NEW PRESERVATION REQUIREMENT WILL ENSURE ACCESS FOR THOUSANDS OF RECORDS THAT MIGHT OTHERWISE HAVE BEEN DESTROYED IN THE NATION'S SECOND-LARGEST CITY.FAC SUED THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD FOR VIOLATIONS OF CALIFORNIA'S OPEN-MEETINGS LAW, THE BROWN ACT. THE BAKERSFIELD CITY COUNCIL MET BEHIND CLOSED DOORS TO DISCUSS A RANGE OF TOPICS THAT ALL BODIES SUBJECT TO THE BROWN ACT ARE REQUIRED TO DISCUSS IN PUBLIC. FAC PREVAILED IN ITS LAWSUIT AGAINST THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE BY OBTAINING FORMERLY CONFIDENTIAL LEGAL MEMOS JUSTIFYING THE KILLING OF AMERICANS ABROAD BY WAY OF WEAPONIZED DRONE -- AND IN 2017 OBTAINED A RULING FROM THE NINTH CIRCUIT THAT WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR PLAINTIFFS BRINGING LAWSUITS UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORAMTION ACT TO RECOVER THEIR ATTORNEYS' FEES.FAC CONTINUED ITS LEGAL BATTLE WITH THE CALIFORNIA STATE BAR TO COMPEL RELEASE OF DATA RELEVANT TO ACADEMIC RESEARCH ON USE OF RACIAL PREFERENCES IN UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS POLICIES.
