Working collaboratively to create environments where breastfeeding is valued and supported to achieve natural infant feeding equity in all Minnesota communities.

| SPAN 1807 is a 5-year project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through the Minnesota Department of Health, to improve the policies and practices of hospital birthing centers around human lactation. We have a part-time project director who recruits and meets with hospital teams regularly to develop action plans, guide policy and practice improvements, and to connect more closely with the community lactation experts. This project includes very modest mini-grants for birthing centers in the learning cohorts to pay for trainings or environmental improvements. The overall goal is for more hospital birthing centers to be optimal environments for breastfeeding initiation. | $1,000 | $16,664 |
| SPAN-ASTHO: "Food Shelves as Breastfeeding Champions," was borne out of the upheaval experienced in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and racial unrest in the Twin Cities. The lead partners for this project, Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition (MBC), have been active over the past decade in building out systems and environments to support breastfeeding families throughout Minnesota. Sudden food deserts and the elevated role of food distribution sites exposed a missed opportunity in supporting breastfeeding families experiencing crisis and food insecurity. This project piloted three approaches for lactation advocates and food insecurity experts to partner and increase both mutual understanding and internal capacity around needs of and supports for breastfeeding families. Success points (1) Access to education for food pantry staff and volunteers on infant formula basics, lactation basics, and community lactation support - food pantry staff are unlikely to have any background in nutrition or lactation. (2) The Bridge Bag concept is sound - bags of 20 ounces of frozen milk are easy to move from the milk bank to families in need, and enclosed resources are critical to continuity of care. (3) WIC is an essential partner; all relevant WIC staff should be oriented to donor milk basics and WIC should be factored into the flowchart of referrals between the food pantry and lactation support. | $3,240 | $12,358 |
| NACCHO (HBC Grant): MBC, with disaggregated data from the Minnesota Department of Health WIC, assisted with contacting key partners in the community to learn more about services and programs that are frequently used by Hmong families. A key aspect of the needs assessment is the period of returning to work, which is a point at which many Hmong families quit breastfeeding. MBC provided technical assistance with accessing the data around the workplace, school, and child care environments. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) is a new partner in the breastfeeding-friendly environments arena; MBC serves as a conduit between DLI and the HBC. HBC has been overseeing the primary method of collecting data about family's experiences and needs through recorded storytelling. The Hmong language does not have a long written history, and the community learns best through oral and visual methods. Accordingly, HBC has prioritized storytelling, videos, and activities such as Facebook Live events to connect with the broader community. | $0 | $12,121 |

“Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition provided a complete copy of this Form 990-EZ and schedules to all members of its governing body before filing the form. The process that the organization used to review the form was as follows and occurred through e-mail review during 11/13/22 to 11/15/22: 1) Discussed who participated in the process and how each participated, 2) Explained MN state or local legal mandates requiring the board to approve Form 990 (and noted the absence of such mandates under federal tax law), 3) Focused attention on organizational policies and disclosure of board members' names/compensation, 4) Noted any areas of sensitivity (comp disclosures), 5) Did a careful read of filer's largest program arenas by expenditure, 6) Discussed how Form 990 is open to public disclosure (Guidestar) and if they wanted any confidential donor contact information redacted from the public version of Schedule B, and 7) Highlighted any changes or departures from positions taken on the prior year's Form 990.”
