Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The common cause education fund employs research, outreach, educational programming, and coalition building to increase public understanding of how our democracy works, empower citizens to hold their government accountable, and promote broad and effective citizen engagement at federal, state and local levels.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Voting and elections-convened a national meeting of civil rights and good government organization leaders, to advance common goals for redistricting.-in california, worked with a large coalition of organizations to publicize the new redistricting process, including holding conferences in los angeles and san francisco, each drawing 150 attendees.-in multiple states, educated the public, press and policy makers about the need to take redistricting out of the hands of politicians.-raised public awareness of the need to strengthen the integrity of elections by improving the accuracy and accountability of voting systems and reducing barriers to voting, especially for traditionally disenfranchised citizens
Activity 3
Ethics, transparency, and accountability in government-citing justices antonin scalia and clarence thomas at partisan fundraising conferences hosted by industrialists charles and david koch, asked the department of justice to investigate whether had a conflict of interest that should have led to their disqualification in the landmark citizens united case on campaign finance. Pressed the supreme court and congress to make it clear that the code of conduct for u.s. Judges, which sets ethical standards for every other federal judge, applies to the supreme court.-in wisconsin, played a significant role in monitoring the process and communicating with the public through the almost month-long controversy over the removal of the collective bargaining rights of wisconsin public-sector employees. As a nonpartisan organization focusing on issues of government openness and transparency and the role of special interest money in the public policymaking process, cc/wi did not take a position on the issue of collective bargaining itself, but worked to make sure the public, press and policymakers understood what was happening in the context of how democracy should work.
