Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Short Run focuses on the medium of comics as a coalescence of art and literature. We believe in the intimate experience of holding a book in your hands. Thats why we highlight artists from the Pacific Northwest and around the world who make alternative comix and self-published, small press, and handmade books of all kinds. We want to ensure that Seattle is considered a destination for small press artists, and a percolator of comics genius.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Short Run Comix & Arts Festival - The festival is our largest program and reaches over 4,500 people. It transcends the commercial comic-con model by enhancing the usual book expo with interactive and collaborative creative experiences, such as artist talks, educational workshops, an animation tent, a literary showcase, live screen printing, and more. We consistently highlight programming by women, people of color, LGBTQ artists, and artists with disabilities. In 2018, we welcomed 280 exhibitors from around the country and special guests from France, Germany, Taiwan, China, and Mexico. The fest is always free to the public, and all ages are welcome.$11,150$40,045
Short Run Trailer Blaze Ladies Comics Residency - Trailer Blaze is held at The Sou'wester Lodge and Vintage Trailer Park in Seaview, WA. The annual residency offers invaluable time and space for emerging and established female artists and writers to do their work without interruption by an increasingly distracting world. Trailer Blaze is also an environment for work to get better-allowing time for contemplation, exploration of the natural world, and fostering connections within the community so we can share ideas, resources, and form lasting bonds. In 2018 we hosted 12 residents including artists Lauren Armstrong, Elaine Lin, Rosie Lockie, ET Russian, and Mega Kelso. We negotiate a discounted weekly rate from the Sou'Wester and then collect fees from residents. We do not make any revenue off this program and Executive Director and Board Members donate their time as facilitators. With money we earned during fundraising in the Spring, we were able to discount the residency further for 3 residents facing financial hardship.$0$3,874
Short Run Micropress publishes hand crafted collections of comics and art that are conceived, printed, and assembled in distinct and innovative ways.$0$767
Short Run Summer School - We held 6 summer school classes including Stop-Motion animation, Inking, Silkscreen printing, Risograph printing, and 2 free classes specifically for youth, drawing from the natural world, in Seward Park and Lincoln Park. 50 students attended, with 2 people receiving financial assistance and 11 others taking classes for free. We were happy to be able to provide this financial flexibility to expand our audience. Our goal of spreading out our classes among different neighborhoods has begun, and we will continue to scout locations further North and South. We went as far as Lake Stevens to hold a comics class for 22 kids. We were happy to have enthusiastic students learning something new, improving their skills, and getting excited about our festival! Summer School and other classes we taught at libraries and art centers brought in $1,070. Our expenses are rented venues ($105), instructor fees ($290), and art supplies ($45).$0$440
The Dash grant awards 1 self-publisher (through an application process) $250, a free half table at the festival, a spot in our annual art show, mentorship by festival special guest, and instruction and access to local screen print co-op the week before the festival.$0$250
