Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Short Run focuses on the medium of comics as a coalescence of art and literature. We believe in the intimate experience of holding a book in your hands. Thats why we highlight artists from the Pacific Northwest and around the world who make alternative comix and self-published, small press, and handmade books of all kinds. We want to ensure that Seattle is considered a destination for small press artists, and a percolator of comics genius.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Short Run Comix & Arts Festival The festival is our largest program and reaches the most people. Over 4,000 people attended in 2017, and 280 artists from all around the world displayed and made money from their work. We partnered with the International Comic Arts Forum (ICAF) to share guests and create creative programming. We welcomed exhibitors and special guests from France, Peru, Taiwan, Japan, Argentina, and Canada. We expanded our festivals creative programming nearby to The Vera Project, an all-ages music venue in order to accommodate our ever-growing audience. The fest is always free to the public. Table fees bring in $14,475. We fundraise at the fest through our bake sale ($1,800), box lunches ($400), merch sales ($3,000), door donations ($500), and later at our after-party (tickets $995, bar $1,300). We also rely on many in-kind donations including printed program, poster paper, lodging for guests, screenprinting labor, coffee beans, etc.$7,485-
Short Run Summer School We held 8 summer school classes in Photoshop, Papermaking, Watercolor, Letterpress printing, Silkscreen printing, How to Be Self-Employed in Seattle, Gag Comix for Kids, and a Paint & Sip! 77 students attended, with 7 people receiving financial assistance and 10 others taking classes for free. We were happy to be able to provide this financial flexibility to expand our audience. Our goal of spreading out our classes among different neighborhoods has begun, and we will continue to scout locations further North and South. We were happy to have enthusiastic students learning something new, improving their skills, and getting excited about our festival! Summer School and other classes we taught at libraries and art centers brought in $2,585.$870-
Short Run Trailer Blaze Ladies Comics Residency Trailer Blaze is held at the Souwester Lodge and Vintage Trailer Park in Seaview, WA. The annual residency offers invaluable time and space for emerging and established female artists and writers to do their work without interruption by an increasingly distracting world. Trailer Blaze is also an environment for work to get better allowing time for contemplation, exploration of the natural world, and fostering connections within the community so we can share ideas, resources, and form lasting bonds. In 2017 we hosted 11 residents including Megan Kelso, Sarah Glidden , and Julia Wertz. We negotiate a discounted weekly rate from the SouWester and then collect fees from residents. We do not make any revenue of this program and directors donate their time as facilitators.--
