| INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW Viable Options is a values-driven organization with a two-fold mission-to implement an innovative pregnancy care model within our region and to influence the greater conversation surrounding pregnancy decisions throughout culture. Viable Options exists to restore autonomy and decisional ownership to those in St. Lawrence County who are facing a pregnancy decision by alleviating the pressures that often cause a lack of confidence or control. This is accomplished through a four-step model of care-clarification, education, navigation, and avocation. We provide our clients with a safe environment in which they can process their thoughts, fears, emotions, desires, and needs-helping them to identify the external pressures and obstacles in their lives and to explore each outcome in light of their immediate circumstances and future hopes. We then equip them with education and information on all available options and resources and reach out to our network of partnering organizations to determine which are best able to offer assistance. After identifying solutions for their unique and varied needs, we then advocate on our clients' behalf and walk with them through the often overwhelming process of seeking and receiving care. Confident choices empower confident futures; we are passionate about helping our clients to reclaim ownership of their decision-making process in order to enable a choice that is wholly theirs-not the result of pressure or necessity. 2019 saw a greater clarification and refinement of our client care and marketing, as well as an in-depth review of our literature and language, assessing their efficacy within our target demographics. But our aim extends far beyond impacting St. Lawrence County; our vision is also to transform the response to pregnancy decisions throughout our culture by equipping individuals and organizations throughout the US with The Third Choice approach. At its core, The Third Choice is a set of principles that enables individuals to go beyond the politics of pro-life vs. pro-choice in order to take personal responsibility for meeting the physical, emotional, material, and relational needs of women and men facing a pregnancy decision. The principles of The Third Choice are: 1. Non-Political. Politics fails women in their moment of need. We all have political biases and opinions; but politics, policies, and politicians will never be able to meet the unique and varying needs of the individual the way their friends and family members can. The Third Choice equips people to go beyond their political priorities, actions, and language to see and serve the woman facing a pregnancy decision.2. Non-Manipulative. Everyone has an opinion about the choice that is made by those in their lives facing a pregnancy decision. And whenever there are opinions about what is best, there is a temptation to control the outcome by manipulation or pressure. Enabling a healthy choice requires creating a safe environment where the priority is valuing the individual-not controlling their decision.3. Relational. Relationships with others enable us to feel loved and valued-offering stability in the most uncertain of times. Women and men facing a pregnancy decision often feel overwhelmed, lonely, and isolated from others. Relationship restores hope by recognizing their dignity, acknowledging their thoughts, fears, and emotions, and becoming the solution for their needs. The Third Choice approach and its principles are distinctively counter-cultural, as for 50 years the response to pregnancy decisions has been largely dominated by political and moral debate, rather than personal responsibility and care. The Third Choice restores the focus of our actions, discussion, and resources onto serving the individual facing a pregnancy decision. It recognizes the value and dignity of the individual walking through the decision process and responds to them with love and compassion. It reclaims responsibility of care for those facing a pregnancy decision from a political arena and returns it to communities and families. It promotes solutions and care which alleviate the pressures that cause many women and men to feel a lack of confidence or control in their choice. It equips people from all backgrounds and beliefs to identify their biases and to grow in an awareness of self and others-enabling people everywhere to go beyond the tensions and politics of culture in order to be present in the lives of those facing a pregnancy decision and to give them informed, empowered ownership. The Third Choice drives both our engagement with our local community and our pursuit of broader cultural change. And the time spent developing and clarifying it throughout 2019 reflects our commitment to bringing it beyond the four walls of Viable Options in order to spark a national movement. Our vision is to see The Third Choice embraced by people from every background and belief-religious and non-religious, democrat and republican, liberal and conservative, rich and poor-and to radically transform the way individuals, families, communities, and culture respond to women and men facing a pregnancy decision. ADOPTING NAVIGATION DEVELOPMENTIn the summer of 2019, we began walking with one of our clients as she looked to pursue an open adoption. This process led to the development of a unique service previously unexplored-adoption navigation support. Now formalized as its own Viable Options service, it affords an individual the opportunity to explore all facets of adoption and gives them a personal advocate to help them navigate the many questions, concerns, and decisions that accompany pursuing an adoption. The unique thing about this service is that, throughout the entire process, it prioritizes the desires and health of the pregnant woman rather than the specific outcome of adoption and offers an avenue of support that otherwise would not exist in our county. The goal of our overarching care model is to restore ownership to women and men facing a pregnancy decision by alleviating the pressures in their lives that often cause them to feel a lack of confidence or control. Our adoption navigation support aligns perfectly within this model, as it allows the pregnant woman to maintain ownership, control, and confidence as she explores and pursues an adoption placement-without the fear of being pressured or manipulated towards a specific outcome. CAMPUS ENGAGEMENTThe presence of four local universities within a 15-mile radius is a unique and valuable opportunity, as not only are those attending among the demographics statistically most likely to experience an unintended pregnancy, but they also represent the generation poised to influence and shape societal perspectives and postures toward important issues. In 2019, we were able to refine our model for campus engagement and significantly increase our on-campus activity and presence. By the end of the year, we had held 12 tabling events, during which 368 student surveys were filled out and submitted, providing valuable insight into the needs and values of the campus community. In the fall semester, we also had the opportunity to do a series of in-class presentations at SUNY Potsdam-directly engaging with students and teaching them about the mission, work, and services of Viable Options and the principles of The Third Choice approach. At the beginning of the fall semester we launched a campus engagement fundraiser-successfully raising $5000 in order to purchase needed supplies and to invest in new designs, and marketing materials for expanded impact in 2020. COMMUNITY NETWORKINGConnecting with individuals and organizations within the local community has always been a critical component of each year's strategic planning and growth. Not only are these relationships essential for coordinating solutions for our clients' needs and advocating on their behalf, but they also enable us to more effectively engage and equip our community with The Third Choice approach. In 2019, our CEO and Director of Operations collectively met with 175 individuals within the community, conducted 35 tours of Viable Options, attended 15 community coalition meetings, had 6 speaking engagements, coordinated 9 tabling events, and had the opportunity throughout the year to collectively present to over 250 social service workers, health care professionals, and community members. | $0 | $0 |
| (Continued from Statement One)6-HOUR TRAININGOur 6-hour training, which details the principles and out workings of The Third Choice approach, is a vital tool for equipping community members to serve those in their lives and community facing a pregnancy decision and to better frame the conversation within their spheres of influence. Accomplishing this requires that the content is effectively developed and laid out in order to be clear, concise, and compelling. During 2019, we completed three major revisions of the 6-hour training, making it more effective and robust than ever, and successfully trained 35 community members. 2019 GALAIn October of 2019, we held our annual gala at SUNY Potsdam. This event serves each year as an opportunity to directly engage with our community of donors, to make connections with those unfamiliar with our organization, to give a detailed update on the activities of the year, and to raise funds for the next year's operations. During our 2019 gala we were also able to announce to those in attendance the securing of a $25k matching gift, which doubled all funds raised through the event.TRADEMARKING BRAND ASSETSIn the fall of 2019, we successfully raised the funds needed to secure a lawyer and submit applications for registering our organization name ("Viable Options"), logo, and "The Third Choice"-allowing us to firmly establish our brand locally and nationally, and lending credibility and consistency to our voice and platform. UPDATED TAGLINEFor the past three years, The Third Choice has served as the tagline for Viable Options. In preparation for launching it nationally within the cultural conversation, and in order to bring greater clarity to our local mission and focus, we updated our tagline at the end of 2019. The new tagline for our organization is "Take Ownership of Your Tomorrow", and is an expression of our desire to see our clients empowered to make decisions that are healthiest for them, their families, and their futures, and to serve and champion them every step of the way. This change also allows us the freedom to use The Third Choice as the platform for our national engagement without clouding the focus of local operations and work. | $0 | $0 |
