We truly believe in a 'hand up, not a hand out' and have seen the impact when individuals can feed their families through successful businesses. In 2020, the organization was partnered with impact-focused entities in Haiti, Cameroon, and Zambia.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

Join the Journey conducted several major changes in 2020 led by the innovative development of a mobile application to connect donors and borrowers called Spark - which also added a digital literacy component with those we served. The organization also shifted its primary focus to Zambia, which expanded/modified some of our programming to tailor to that geographic region. We also adapted to a COVID-19 environment by hosting virtual events. For example, JTJ put on for the first-time ever a hackathon that drew participants from around the globe. Finally, the organization provided advisory and technical services to social enterprises and other non-profits to help them grow.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

Join the Journey discontinued a multitude of its humanitarian activities as part of a strategic decision to focus exclusively on empowerment. JTJ oversaw a one-time compassion-based food aid delivery at the height of COVID but did not undertake anything further. This included discontinuing its annual toy drive at Christmas, Project Bright Smile. JTJ shifted a significant amount of its activity to a virtual environment due to COVID-19.

IRS990/Desc0Micro-loan Grants- The organization partners with local churches non-governmental organizations, and micro-finance entities in third-world countries to administer empowerment programs meant to increase the livelihood of impoverished families. Our foreign partners administer micro-loans to qualified beneficiaries. For 2020, there were a total of 30 beneficiaries in the program with resulting in 150 people benefitting. We also trained 100-plus through our weekly Spark mentorship. Additional expenses in this category include costs for oversight of the program and reporting.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Compassion Grants - JTJ partners with local churches to facilitate grants meant to sustain immediate needs, primarily in the form of food aid and benevolence gifts to ministry workers who often do not collect a true salary. In 2020, JTJ provided humanitarian aid at the height of COVID, working with global partners to help people who were in insolation. We estimated at least 1,000 people benefitted from this programming line.

These enhancements provided significant increase in capability to manage the micro-loan program.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Join the Journey conducted several major changes in 2020 led by the innovative development of a mobile application to connect donors and borrowers called Spark - which also added a digital literacy component with those we served.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Join the Journey discontinued a multitude of its humanitarian activities as part of a strategic decision to focus exclusively on empowerment.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Members verbally report life events to include current employment. At no time, has a board member reported any activities that may be a conflict of interest, especially since grants go to foreign partners overseas.
