WE CONTINUED TO WORK ON THE PRODUCE PACKS PROJECT, SELLING MORE THAN 400 PACKS OF LOCAL PRODUCE TO LOW-INCOME CONSUMERS AT FIVE CONVENIENCE STORES IN RURAL WARREN COUNTY, INCREASING OUR REACH INTO THE COMMUNITY. THE PRODUCE PACKS CONCEPT WAS CO-DEVELOPED WITH RESEARCHERS AT UNC-CHAPEL HILL AS A NOVEL DELIVERY MECHANISM FOR LOCAL PRODUCE INTO LOW- INCOME COMMUNITIES. | IN 2013, THE UNC SPARC (SUSTAINED PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS) EFFORT CONTINUED. IN THIS WORK, WE PARTNER WITH RESEARCHERS AT UNC-CHAPEL HILL TO DEVELOP COMMUNITY-BASED RESEARCH INITIATIVES THAT WILL FURTHER OUR FOOD SYSTEM REVITALIZATION EFFORTS. IN 2013, WE CO- AUTHORED TWO PROPOSALS WITH UNC FACULTY TO SUPPORT OUR FOOD SYSTEMS WORK IN THE WARREN COUNTY REGION, AND WITH THE HELP OF A PART-TIME STAFF PERSON, PROVIDED RESEARCH SUPPORT TO A YOUTH ENGAGEMENT EFFORT IN THE COUNTY WHICH SERVED 25 STUDENTS. THE GOAL OF THIS ENGAGEMENT IS TO PRODUCE CRITICALLY- MINDED YOUTH WHO ARE BETTER POSITIONED TO PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NEEDS OF THE AREA AND TO CONTRIBUTE TO A MORE ROBUST LOCAL FOOD ECONOMY. “The majority of our current work can be described as rebuilding local and regional food systems. In this work, we partner with farmers, retailers and institutions to increase access to fresh, healthy food by building connections between farmers and new markets in our region. There are several projects that support this general goal. In 2013, we focused on developing a farm-to-institution project called the chopped produce initiative, in which we connect local farmers (including two minority and limited resource farmers) to new markets through a value- added product: chopped and bagged cabbage and collards. This project requires that working landscapes manage relationships, infrastructure, marketing and food safety along every step of the farm-to-fork continuum. We sold chopped, bagged produce to two school systems in 2013, reaching more than 3,000 students, the majority of which are low-income. In the next five years, we will build on the success of this project, growing it to a financially sustainable scale and working with farmers and institutions to develop additional value-added agricultural products.”
“Produce packs. We purchased produce from nine local farmers for this project in 2013 (up from three in 2012), including six limited resource, minority, or women farmers.”
“In 2013, the unc sparc (sustained participatory action research collaborations) effort continued. The sparc has been unable to raise additional funding, and as of the end of 2013, we do not have any new active research/engagement activities through the unc partnership.”
