“In 2013 kenya keys started two new programs. One was the usalama (protection) project, which encompasses outreach and protection of the most vulnerable girls. This includes transferring them to schools that are best suited to them, the paying of back fees, emergency funding for girls who are starving , being abused, or are being sold into marriages against their will. The project also includes a yearly conference that brings approximately 300 girls together for a day of educational and motivational lectures and activities, as well as providing them opportunities to access further mentorship.the second new program was the adult education class. This is class offered twice a week for 3 hours for the purpose of teaching adults who were never able to attend secondary school. The classes also prepare them to sit for the kcse, the national exam that is required to be taken for a secondary diploma. The classes are taught by kenya keys graduates and materials are provided by kenya keys. There are currently 40 people in the class.”

“Other program services 4: general - in service area. Funds are provided for general administrative expenses in supporting educational sponsorship and educational projects in the kenya keys service area. Other program services 5: leadership, training and support. 1) kenya keys is partnering with undugu mentorship initiative, a kenya based all-volunteer, non-profit organization, they are comprised of graduates of the high schools in the kenya keys service area who have gone on to college and university and are now returning on weekends and holidays to mentor students in high school and primary schools in studying and career guidance skills. 2) kenya keys created and is mentoring the sos (save our sisters) girls group of taru secondary school. The group visits the nine primary schools in the kenya keys service area, empowering the girls to meet the extreme challenges (staying in school, early marriages, rape, prostitution) they face. In conjunction with their presentations on feminine hygiene, they distribute sanitary kits provided by kenya keys. Other program services 6: presentations: over 20 public educational presentations were given to high schools, elementary and middle schools, church groups, and rotary clubs, in utah, oregon, and california, to promote understanding of poverty issues and the value of education. Other program services 7: in-country visits. All in-country teams were canceled in 2013 due to extremely heightened security warnings. Two board members did make a visit in december of 2013. Other program services 8: ndohivyo special needs school. A new energy efficient stove was provided for the school. 33 of the 56 students attending the school were sponsored by kenya keys. The grounds keeper and matron's salaries were paid for by grants from kenya keys as well.”
