IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Infrastructure: The goal of the Infrastructure Program is to further the effective impact of our education activities through the provision of facilities and facility enhancements. In 2017, we embarked on the building of a girls' dormitory at Taru Girls Secondary School, where over 200 girls were crowded into a dorm built for 80. This new dormitory will provide a safe and healthy environment for girls to flourish as they focus on their education.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Kenyan Engagement Program: The goal of our Kenyan Engagement program is to provide funding support to local Kenyans to implement the goals and objectives of the organization on the ground in the villages. These funds provide internal support of in-country leadership, engaging local Kenyans in the development and implementation of Kenya Keys programs, including the Sponsorship, Girl Empowerment, Library, Global Classroom, Ndohivyo and Infrastructure Programs. This also supports the development of community education and leadership programs, such as adult education classes and leadership training, which further the goals of the organization. In 2017, the Kenyan Board of Directors held their first 4-day planning retreat to map out goals and strategies for success as we continue to strengthen and expand our programs. We support a new woman with Kenya Keys (Kenya) to oversee our programs for girls, helping to assure that we effectively address their unique needs while striving to provide educational opportunities for both boys and girls. Encouraging students to engage in their own development and success, Kenya Keys has supported the formation of a local boys club to serve as a compliment to the girls club formed several years ago. These peer-led groups encourage scholastic dedication, responsibility and support of one another. Our growing college graduate alumni group has flourished and is now an integral part of our mentoring program for younger students and networking amongst themselves for job finding assistance.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0International Visits: The goal of our International Visits program is to provide cultural exchange opportunities for greater understanding and communication, to oversee on-the-ground implementation of programs, and to strengthen our leadership teams. We sent a team of 11 interns to Taru village in 2017; each intern brought unique skills and talents, and all took away valuable insight to the challenges of life in Kenya. The interns worked with local staff and volunteers to build upon our programs, provide inspiration to the students and focused support to the libraries, student conferences, special-needs students and infrastructure projects.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1Awareness: The goal of the Awareness Program is to educate and inspire people to better understand the challenges of life in rural Kenya and how they can engage in making a difference. In 2017, one of our sponsored-student college alumni created a dynamic music video showing the impact of Kenya Keys and providing a dynamic way to introduce the organization. Presentations by volunteers in 2017 were focused on Rotary Clubs, school groups and small-group gatherings, expanding our base of supporters and sponsors. Kenya Keys continues to maintain an active social media presence through Facebook, Instagram, our e-newsletter Jambo and our online blog.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc2Libraries: The goal of the Libraries program is to support the development and enhancement of school libraries, the Community Library and special library programs throughout the service area. This includes providing space, shelving and books for libraries. We currently support 9 libraries in primary schools, 3 in secondary schools and 1 in the community. In 2017, our Library Coordinator from the USA Board of Directors traveled to Kenya to work with librarians and representatives from schools and the community to evaluate current processes, systematize the workflow at each library, and advise them on how to improve the functionality and impact of each library. Additionally, Kenya Keys provided the funding for much-needed revision books for the schools, and interns delivered 181 donated books to the libraries.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc3Girl Empowerment: The goal of the Girl Empowerment program is to support, empower and protect girls in this region of rural Kenya, addressing their physical, emotional and education needs. Under the guidance of our new Kenya staff overseeing Girls Programs and with the support of our alumni, Kenya Keys expanded the annual Girls' Conference in 2017 to include visits to primary schools. These visits connected young girls with successful women to openly discuss the challenges they face. This unprecedented outreach effort culminated in an International Day of the Girl celebration and engaged more than 3,000 girls in crucial conversations and mentoring - all aimed at helping girls find their voices and stay in school. We continued our extensive Sanitary Kit program, providing over 850 reusable sanitary kits to girls in Kenya. Additionally we provided 15 at-risk girls with emergency housing, food, transportation and support through our Usalama Program.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc4Ndohivyo: The goal of the Ndohivyo program is to provide support for the Ndohivyo Special Needs school and the students who attend. In 2017, Kenya Keys provided funds to enable 33 students to attend the Ndohivyo who would otherwise not be able to go to school. Additionally, this program supports three full-time staff at the school, a matron that lives with the children in the dormitory, a cook and a groundskeeper. In the summer, a volunteer with expertise in special needs education traveled to Kenya and met with the school administrators to provide information and support, serving as a valuable resource for them. The annual "Special Olympics" event sponsored by Kenya Keys, was extended this year to include students from outlying schools. The year ended on an extremely sad note with the passage of Raphael Galuka, headmaster of the school, and Kenya Keys board member.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc5Global Classroom: The goal of the Global Classroom program is to connect children in schools in the U.S. with those in Kenya through raising money for specific projects for their schools. In 2017 children in the U.S. raised money through a cultural awareness dinner and a fun run to complete the construction of a primary-school classroom at Mtulu Primary school. This allows all students now to be inside a classroom, protected from the hot sun or heavy rains. Students in Utah also raised funds to provide students in drought-stricken villages with school meals. Students in Oregon also created a beautiful cloth mural which was hand-carried to Kenya by our Global Classroom Coordinator. Students in Kenya then created a mural to send back, providing a beautiful testament of the connection between students on opposite sides of the world. Kenya Keys is pleased to be positioned to make these meaningful connections possible.
