Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The San Francisco Public Press is a nonprofit, noncommercial news organization that reports local public-interest news, doing for print and Web journalism what public broadcasting does for radio and television. We provide the kind of context-rich reporting that has all but disappeared from the Bay Area in the last decade. In addition to original explanatory and investigative reporting focusing on populations overlooked by the commercial press, we collaborate with about 30 public media and public-affairs organizations, coordinating coverage and sharing content. Online since 2009, we launched a quarterly print edition in 2010. Each print issue includes a special project that is also featured online at sfpublicpress.org. We published in-depth cover stories on these topics in 2014: 1) Parent fundraising in local public schools: Our reporting uncovered significant increases in PTA fundraising at some San Francisco elementary schools over the past decade and showed how that trend has created greater disparity in the quality of education provided by local schools. Parents at some schools were able to raise large sums to counteract state cuts in funding, while other schools were forced to lay off teachers and cut programs. 2) Housing Solutions: We hosted a one-day conference for 150 people featuring a dozen experts who presented ideas on possible solutions to the affordable housing crisis in the Bay Area. The conference offered a workshop in design thinking and breakout groups where community members and experts discussed their ideas about increasing access to affordable housing that could work in the Bay Area. San Francisco Public Press reporters covered the event and -- with additional research and reporting after the conference -- produced a series of extended articles on various housing solutions. 3) Homelessness: We examined the causes of homelessness and the efficacy of local policies intended to solve the problem, focusing attention on the intersection of poverty, mental health and San Francisco's crescendoing housing crisis. The Public Press aims to change the nature of the conversation about local accountability journalism in Northern California by producing more data-driven, analytical, systems-based and collaborative projects. Our in-depth reporting focuses on the lives of under-served members of the community, including immigrants, low-income workers and minorities. We write about the concerns of non-elites, who are often neglected in the advertising-supported mainstream press. With funding primarily from grants and individual member-donors, we are building a nonprofit news model supported by the community. Our news stories are available free online at sfpublicpress.org. We send the print edition of the San Francisco Public Press to all member-donors and sell it for $1 through about 45 retail locations around the Bay Area. It is also available for mail order through the website. Of 29,000 newspapers printed in 2014, we distributed about 10,000 copies to health clinics and community and senior centers through a free distribution program now in its fifth year. In 2014, we also tested a pilot outreach program, which entailed giving away thousands of newspapers at a variety of community events and public venues to increase the visibility of the organization and bring our in-depth reports to broader audiences. The Winter 2014 edition included as a section insert a special commemorative edition of the San Francisco Bay Guardian produced by its former staff after its owners closed the publication in October 2014.$39,500$41,589

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0We submitted the Form 990-EZ through form990.org on the Nov. 16, 2015 deadline. It was rejected by the IRS with two errors: 1) F990-906-01: The return type indicated in the return header must match the return type established with the IRS for the EIN. 2) F990-902-01: The EIN in the return must have been established as an exempt organization return filer in the e-file database. We contacted the IRS e-file division and were told that there was a back-end problem with our account in the database. We waited to receive a call from the IRS that the problem with the e-file database had been corrected, which took more than 10 days due to a backlog of cases in the e-file division. We then contacted form990.org to request that our filing be returned to edit mode so that we could submit it again.
