Mission

The pulsera project's mission is to create a more just and colorful world through the education and empowerment of nicaraguan and u.s. Youth.we engage us students in international service to provide economic opportunities for young nicaraguans. We also advocate for progressive ideas about international service that value economic aid as just one part of a mutual exchange that also includes the sharing of knowledge, ideas, and life experiences for the benefit of all.

THE PULSERA PROJECT USES ALL FUNDS RAISED TO OPERATE AND SUPPORT NON-PROFIT PROGRAMS.SEE SCHEDULE O FOR CONTINUATION(S).THE LARGEST PERCENTAGE OF PULSERA PROJECT MONEY GOES DIRECTLY TO PULSERA, HEADBAND, AND BAG MAKERS, WHO CREATE AN AMAZING ARRAY OF ARTWORK FOR THE PULSERA PROJECT. ABOUT 100 INDEPENDENT ARTISANS EARN INCOME SELLING ART TO THE PULSERA PROJECT. FOR MOST OF THEM, THIS IS THEIR SOLE INCOME SOURCE. THE ARTISANS ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE PULSERA CO-OP (JOVENES UNIDOS POR UN NUEVO COMIENZO), 9 ARTISAN FAMILIES IN MASAYA AND CATARINA, THE EL CHILE WOMEN'S COOPERATIVE IN MATAGALPA, NICARAGUA, THE MAYA MAM WOMEN'S COOPERATIVE IN GUATEMALA, SI A LA VIDA YOUTHS, AND THE NEWEST ADDITION - THE TUKULA WOMEN'S COOPERATIVE IN UGANDA, WHO MAKE RECYCLED PAPER PULSERAS. AFTER PAYING THE PULSERA MAKERS, WE INVEST IN PROJECTS WITH A COMMON THEME - PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE TO REALIZE THEIR DREAMS, MOSTLY THROUGH EDUCATION. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE PULSERA PROJECT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ARTISANS; SCHOLARSHIP AND TEACHER SUPPORT MONEY DONATED TO LA ESPERANZA GRANADA, WHICH BUILDS, STAFFS, AND SUPPORTS SCHOOLS; DONATIONS FOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS RUN BY GRUPO FENIX, A NICARAGUAN LEADER IN SUSTAINABLE ENERGY EDUCATION. PROJECT FUNDING ALSO SUPPORTS THE SI A LA VIDA SHELTERS FOR ABANDONED AND ABUSED BOYS IN MANAGUA AND OMETEPE, AND THE LA ISLA FOUNDATION, WHICH ADVOCATES FOR WORKERS' RIGHTS AND CONDUCTS RESEARCH INTO KIDNEY DISEASE THAT AFFECTS SUGARCANE WORKERS.THIS YEAR, THE PROJECT ATTAINED RECOGNITION AS A NICARAGUAN NGO (NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION), LED BY PROJECT MANAGER JUAN CARLOS MAYORGA. THIS DESIGNATION PROVIDES A LEVEL OF LEGITIMACY AND RESPECT FOR OUR OPERATIONS WITHIN NICARAGUA. PROJECT FUNDS SUPPORT CASA PULSERA, THE PROJECT'S RENTAL HOUSE/COMMUNITY CENTER IN GRANADA. THIS YEAR WE MOVED INTO A LARGER SPACE THAT PROVIDES ROOM FOR BOTH AN OFFICE AND A (FUTURE) STORE WHICH WILL BE RUN BY CO-OP MEMBERS AS A WAY TO CONNECT WITH AND EDUCATE RESIDENTS OF AND VISITORS TO NICARAGUA. WE CONTINUE TO FUND INTEREST FREE MICRO-LOANS AND SMALL GRASS-ROOTS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS LED BY CO-OP MEMBERS, INCLUDING SOCCER AND BASEBALL TEAMS, AND ART, LANGUAGE, BAKING, AND HAMMOCK-MAKING CLASSES. ON THE US SIDE OF THE WORLD, WHILE ALL GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE WORK IN THE US IS DONE BY VOLUNTEERS, COLIN CRANE AND CHRIS HOWELL ARE PAID TO RUN US PROJECT OPERATIONS THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE THAT MAKES EVERYTHING ELSE POSSIBLE. THEY COORDINATED 354 SCHOOL PULSERA SALES, AND ATTENDED AND PRESENTED AT LANGUAGE CONFERENCES, SERVICE ORGANIZATION CONFERENCES, AND FESTIVALS. CHRIS' SPANISH LANGUAGE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM, BASED ON PULSERA PROJECT PEOPLE AND ACTIVITIES, IS NOW USED BY MANY SPANISH TEACHERS TO INTEGRATE LANGUAGE, CULTURAL, AND FAIR TRADE EDUCATION INTO CLASSROOMS. COLIN CONTINUES TO MANAGE OUR WEBSITE, PHOTOS, DESIGN, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND ONLINE SALES. EVERY JULY, THE PROJECT RUNS A TRIP TO NICARAGUA FOR STUDENT VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE LED SCHOOL PULSERA SALES. A GROUP OF 12 TRAVELED TO NICARAGUA IN JULY 2012. TRIP PARTICIPANTS PAY THEIR OWN TRAVEL EXPENSES. THESE TRIPS PROVIDE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT THE US STUDENTS WITH THE NICARAGUAN ARTISANS, AND TO DEEPEN THE UNDERSTANDING OF EACH OTHERS' CULTURES AND EXPERIENCES. ALL TRAVEL WITHIN NICARAGUA INCLUDES BOTH US STUDENTS AND NICARAGUANS WE ARE COMMITTED TO CREATING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY, AND TO CHANGING THE PARADIGM OF 'LOOKING' AND 'HELPING' TO ONE OF 'SHARING' AND 'LEARNING'.
