Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We provide food for homeless people who live in their vehicles with their children and pets. We also provide pet food to low income people and cat food for feral cats. We find homes for pets when their homeless owners can no longer care for them. We conduct numerous spay/neuter programs in various areas in Southern California.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Basic Needs Foundation Accomplishments for 2022: Basic Needs Foundation provides both people food and pet food for very low-income working homeless individuals who live in their vehicles with their children and pets. The average income for these families is $475 per month. Most of these homeless individuals can only find part-time jobs in low-paying retail positions. Many animals are abandoned or surrendered to city and county shelters because their low-income owners cannot afford to feed their pets. Because they have lost their jobs, their homes go into foreclosure and these families are evicted with no other options . Our Foundation alleviates the financial and physical burden on city and county animal shelters, and also on taxpayers, by providing pet food to enable low-income individuals to keep their pets. Restricted and unrestricted grants from animal welfare foundations allow us to offer free spaying and neutering, and Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) of feral cats to low-income, homeless pet owners and feral cat feeders in several rural communities. We altered 327 dogs, cats and feral cats in 2022 and we adopted out 72 pets to their forever homes. We also subsidized critical veterinary care for low-income pet owners on a case-by- case basis. We re-homed 56 semi-feral and feral cats to the Barn Cat program. This program is a way to provide a second chance to semi-feral and feral cats. They are fully vetted cats that are placed within barns, farm structures, outbuildings, factories and warehouses. In a symbiotic relationship, cats receive shelter, fresh water and a regular food supply and keep mice and rats out of these facilities. They may eat rats and mice, who bring diseases and destruction to supplies, but the presence of cats also deters rats from coming nearby. This is because cats mark their territory by simply rubbing up against things, and even the scent of a cat can make rats scatter. The Fix Your Pets program has altered over 4,921 pets and community and feral cats, since August, 2011, via Mobile Spay and Neuter Clinics. These are nonprofit discount spay and neuter clinics such as Critters Without Litters, and traditional clinics such as CalCity Pet Clinic and 4 Paws Pet Hospital. We are very grateful for your kind support of our organization since 2009. Due to the challenge of unable to raise enough funds for future years, we have closed our doors and dissolved Basic Needs Foundation as of December 31, 2022. Thank you for your generous support since 2009, the year we originally began helping others and their pets. Goodbye to all and to all a good and worthy life.-$79,519
