Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Basic Needs Foundation, Inc. provides food for very low income working homeless people who live in their vehicles with children and pets. Their average income is net $475 per month. One of our goals is to reduce the number of mouths that poor families have to feed with their limited income by means of spaying/neutering their pets via Mobile Clinics, the Discount Spay & Neuter Clinic and The Critters Without Litters in Bakersfield, Kern County, CA.We also provide pet food for their homeless owners who are low-income dog & cat owners and need immediate pet food assistance. We find homes for pets when their homeless owners can no longer care for them. Many animals are abandoned because their owners cannot afford to feed their pets. Their owners lost jobs, homes are in foreclosures and also evictions. Many people end up living in their cars.Current programs and accomplishments: Programs:Accountability and dignity are the two focuses of our community programs. We serve 29 working homeless families who have been living in their vehicles for over nine months. Requirements and benefits of our program include the following: - the homeless children of these families must have a passing grade in school. - the working homeless families receive health club memberships for showers and family time in a safe environment.- they receive a Senior TracFone, http://seniorvaluecellphone.com for job search.- one spouse from each family is required to attend the Home Health Aide class at a local vocational school. The program lasts six months.- upon receiving the Home Health Aide certificate, they can find full time employment at $10 - $12/hour as Home Health Aides. They have enough income to move into small apartments. Baby Boomers face shortages of home health aides and therefore, jobs are plentiful in this industry.-Twenty-nine poverty stricken, working, homeless families are selected for our community program. We do not accept candidates who are alcoholics, drug dependent, or are mentally health challenged as we are not equipped to serve them. Several local businesses have generously sponsored some essential items for these homeless families by providing TracFones, health club memberships, safe places to park vehicles at night, motel vouchers for Thanksgiving and Christmas stay, and discount vet care. Accomplishments: -Seventeen of the twenty five original homeless families are no longer living in their vehicles since 2009 with our program. They have moved into their own places and have actual addresses to call homes. - Their children no longer live in fear that they may be stigmatized by their classmates if their homeless status becomes known because having a place to call home has relieved them of this stigma.- We currently serve 20 working homeless families in our program.- Twenty pets have been re-homed successfully because their owners can no longer afford to keep them in their vehicles.- We provided four days of Fix Your Pets via mobile clinics during 2013: May 4th, June 1st, July 27th, and August 24th and spayed or neutered 196 pets. The services were provided for the poverty stricken pet owners in rural towns of Onyx, Weldon, South Lake, Squirrel Valley, Bodfish, Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella, Mountain Mesa , Havilah, and Caliente of First District (Kern River Valley) in Kern County, California. - We also started using the Discount Spay & Neuter Clinic and The Critters Without Litters in Bakersfield, Kern County, CA. A total of 161 pets were fixed using this clinic. Pet owners have a long distance drive from the Kern River Valley to the clinic to get their sponsored pets fixed through the program. The Fix Your Pets program has altered 602 pets since August 20th, 2011 via 9 mobile spay/neuter clinics and the Discount Spay & Neuter Clinic and The Critters Without Litters in Bakersfield, Kern County, CA. Please help us to continue these services in 2014 by donating to our cause. Our website is www.basicneedsfoundation.org and we thank you for your support.$52,672-
