Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We provide food for homeless people who live in their vehicles with their children and pets. We also provide pet food to low income people and cat food for feral cats. We find homes for pets when their homeless owners can no longer care for them. We conduct numerous spay/neuter programs in various areas in Southern California.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Spay/Neuter Program Temporarily Restricted FundsProgram Service Accomplishments: - 656 pets have been spayed/neutered through TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) via our Fix Your Pets program. The services were provided for the poverty stricken pet owners in rural towns of Onyx, Weldon, South Lake, Squirrel Valley, Bodfish, Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella, Mountain Mesa, Havilah, and Caliente of First District (Kern River Valley), Delano, McFarland, Lost Hills, Wasco, Shafter, Greenacres, Buttonwillow, Taft, Maricopa, Frazier Park, Lebec, Arvin, Tehachapi, Boron, Mojave, North Edwards, Rosamond, Ridgecrest, California City, Inyokern Walker Pass, Johannesburg, Randsburg, and Kern County of California, - the "Fix Your Pets" program has altered over 2,517 pets and community/feral cats since August 20, 2011 via nine Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinics, the Discount Spay & Neuter Clinic, the Critters Without Litters and 4Paws Pet Hospital in Bakersfield, Kern County, CA, and CalCity Pet Clinic in California City, Kern County, CA.$81,422-
Basic Needs Foundation, Inc. provides food for very low income working homeless people who live in their vehicles with children and pets. Their average net income is $475 per month. One of our goals is to reduce the number of mouths that poor families have to feed with their limited income by means of spaying/neutering their pets. We provide these services free of charge to the pet owner through generous donations from our benefactors. The services are provided via several clinics, including The Critters Without Litters and 4 Paws Pet Hospital in Bakersfield, Kern County, CA and CalCity Pet Clinic in California City, Kern County, CA.We also provide pet food for low-income dog and cat owners who need immediate pet food assistance. Many animals are abandoned because their owners cannot afford to feed their pets. This can be caused by owners losing jobs, homes in foreclosures and also evictions. As a result, these people end up living in their cars. We find homes for pets when their homeless owners can no longer care for them. Ongoing Program Accomplishments: - accountability and dignity are the two focuses of our community programs. We serve 27 working homeless families who have been living in their vehicles for over twelve months, - requirements and benefits of our program include the following: - the homeless children of these families must have a passing grade in school, - the working homeless families receive health club memberships for showers and family time in a safe environment, - the homeless families receive a Senior TracFone for job search, http://seniorvaluecellphone.com, - one spouse from each family is required to attend the six-month long Home Health Aide class at a local vocational school, - upon receiving the Home Health Aide certificate, they can find full time employment at $12 - $15 per hour as Home Health Aides. They eventually have enough income to move into small apartments. Baby Boomers face shortages of home health aides and make jobs more plentiful in this industry. - we do not accept candidates who are alcoholics, drug dependent, or are mentally health challenged, as we are not equipped or qualified to serve them. Several local businesses have generously sponsored some essential items for these homeless families, such as, TracFone, health club memberships, safe places to park vehicles at night, motel vouchers for Thanksgiving and Christmas stay overs, and discount veterinarian care.Program Accomplishments in 2016: - 42 poverty stricken, working, homeless families have successfully gone through our programs since 2009 and are currently living in their own apartments, - their children no longer live in fear that they may be stigmatized by their classmates if their homeless status becomes known because having a place to call home has relieved them of this stigma, - we currently serve 25 working homeless families in our program, and it could be more, but we had to reduce our assistance due to limited funding to our organization during 2016, - 67 pets (55 dogs and 12 cats) have been re-homed successfully with new pet owners because their former owners could no longer afford to keep them in their vehicles,Please help us to continue these services in 2017 by donating to our cause. Our website is www.basicneedsfoundation.org and we thank you for your generous support.$55,083-
Build an Isolation/Medical Unit Temporarily Restricted Funds:Program Service Accomplishments:Built a Medical/Isolation unit for the citys animal shelter in California City, CA. The sick shelter pets can now be isolated and treated in the new unit before they are adopted out to the general public. Prior to establishing the Medical/Isolation unit, sick, contagious pets had to be kenneled in the same area with healthy pets. That caused more pets to be euthanized as the shelter had no funds to isolate before treating them. Thanks to this new unit, pets can be isolated until no longer contagious and the worst alternative of euthanazia has been almost eradicated.$32,524-
Veteran Pet May Temporarily Restricted Funds:Program Accomplishments:Pete May, a 71-year-old disabled Vietnam veteran with PTSD, was living in a single wide trailer, which was completely dilapidated and was living off-grid with his dogs whom he considered to not only be his family, but his only family in Llano, CA. On December 11th, 2016, we delivered a 31-foot Coachmen Travel trailer to him, complete with heat, shower, stove, television, radio, refrigerator, oven and more. His reaction to this life-altering gift was captured on video and shared with donors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXpEKMufUX4One week before Christmas 2016, we were able to retrofit Pete Mays new home with solar panels, septic and water tanks and other supplies to enable him to live comfortably off-grid.$11,259-
