IRS990EZ/PrimaryExemptPurpose0TO TEACH RURAL AFRICAN FARMERS HOW TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN WIND-POWERED WATER PUMPS FOR IRRIGATING FARM LANDS, PROPOGATING ADVANCED SUSTAINABLE IRRIGATION AND FARMING TECHNIQUES IN SOUTHERN AFRICA.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0IN 2012, AFRICA WINDMILL PROJECT CONTINUED WORKING WITH AREA CHIEFS IN THE CENTRAL REGION OF MALAWI. FOCUSING ON TRAININGS AT THE DEMONSTRATION GARDEN, AWP WAS ABLE TO TRAIN AND SUPPORT 23 AREA VILLAGES AS WELL AS MINISTRIES WITHIN THE GOVERNMENT AND BEGIN TRAININGS FOR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS. TRAININGS FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE, IRRIGATION, FARM MANAGEMENT AND FIELD TO MARKET STRATEGIES. AWP BEGAN DEVELOPING A PEDAL PUMP FOR STAGE 2 IRRIGATION. THE HAND PUMP SYSTEM CONTINUED TO BE REFINED AND IMPROVED. BOTH THE HAND CRANK AND PEDAL PUMPS WERE TAKEN TO VARIOUS LOCATIONS FOR DEMONSTRATIONS AND TRAININGS AND HAVE PERMANENT INSTALLATIONS AT THE DEMONSTRATION GARDEN. AFRICA WINDMILL PROJECT NOTED SOME KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS IN 2012: FARMERS THAT BEGAN TRAINING IN 2010 WERE COMPLETELY SELF-SUFFICIENT (NO MATERIAL AID WAS GIVEN), GARDENS HAD GROWN 5 FOLD, FARMERS' INCOME HAD GREATLY INCREASED: THEY HAD SAVED A PORTION OF THE INCOME FROM THE PREVIOUS GROWING SEASONS TO PROVIDE FOR START UP COSTS FOR THEIR NEXT SEASON GARDEN. THEY USED THE INCOME TO IMPROVE THEIR LIVING CONDITIONS, FOR INSTANCE, WE SAW IRON SHEETS ON THEIR ROOFS THAT REPLACED THE GRASS ROOFS THERE THE YEAR BEFORE. THESE FARMERS ALSO BUILT LARGER GRAIN STORAGE BUILDINGS AND USED THE INCOME FOR EDUCATIONAL EXPENSES FOR THEIR CHILDREN. FARMERS THAT GRADUATED FROM THE TRAININGS HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED FOOD SHORTAGE IN THE LAST 2 YEARS. WE OBSERVED THAT THEY HAVE CONTINUED TO WORK WITH OTHER FARMERS WITHIN THEIR VILLAGE, TRAINING AND TEACHING THEM ABOUT WHAT THEY HAD LEARNED AND IMPLEMENTED IN THEIR GARDENS. WE ALSO HAD AN INCREASE IN INTEREST FROM SURROUNDING FARMERS THAT HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY PARTICIPATED IN ANY TRAININGS. THESE SUCCESSFUL FARMERS ALSO CONTINUED TO LOOK TO AFRICA WINDMILL PROJECT FOR GUIDANCE AS TO HOW TO GROW THEIR GARDENS, INCREASE THEIR YIELD AND REFINE THEIR TECHNOLOGIES. AFRICA WINDMILL PROJECT PRESENTED AT THE UNITED STATE CONFERENCE AT ECHO TO TALK ABOUT SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND DESIGNING AND UTILIZATION OF APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY. APPROXIMATELY 1,100 VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE CONTRIBUTED FOR THE RUNNING AND OPERATIONAL EFFORTS OF THIS PROGRAM.
