Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Beauty bus delivers dignity, hope and respite to chronically or terminally ill men, women and children - and their caregivers - through beauty and grooming treatments and pampering products.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Pop-up salon program brings beauty and grooming services on site to various caregiver events and places that serve the foundations patient populations. At pop-up salons patients and caregivers receive a variety of complimentary beauty and grooming services in a setting that promotes support and serenity. In 2012, the foundation changed the virtual salon program name to pop-up salons to better portray the program. 20 pop-up salons were held in 2012 with partners including ucla mattel childrens hospital, city of hope, usc keck hospital, ronald mcdonald house charities, los angeles caregiver resource center, no worries now (prom for terminally ill children), glendale adventist medical center, wespark cancer support center, concern foundation and leezas place.
Activity 3
From inception, bags filled with product have been given to each patient and caregiver after an in-home service or at a pop-up salon to prolong the impact of their beauty bus experience until their next service. In 2012, beauty bus added the bag of beauty program which not only encompasses the delivery of bags in conjunction with the other two programs (in-home and pop-up), but allows patients and caregivers nationwide, whom beauty bus cannot yet visit in person, to receive bags filled with pampering product as a reminder that they are beautiful inside and outside. Bags of beauty are either sent to the homes of individuals that qualify or sent to social service partners to distribute to their constituents. In 2012, beauty bus delivered 4306 bags of beauty to chronically or terminally ill people and their caregivers.

IRS990/Description0PROVIDES IN-HOME BEAUTY AND GROOMING SERVICES, FREE OF CHARGE, TO PATIENTS WHOSE ILLNESS OR CONDITION PREVENTS THEM FROM ACCESSING A SALON OR SPA AND THEIR CAREGIVERS. PATIENTS ARE REFERRED FROM THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY, HOSPICE AGENCIES AND PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS THAT SERVE SIMILAR POPULATIONS. TERMINALLY AND CHRONICALLY ILL PATIENTS OFTEN FEEL VERY ISOLATED, BUT ARE NOT OFTEN STRONG ENOUGH OR ABLE TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES OR THE CONFINES OF THEIR BEDS. SOMETIMES, JUST GETTING TO THE DOCTOR CAN BE A MAJOR UNDERTAKING. IN ADDITION, MANY CAREGIVERS ARE WIVES, HUSBANDS, CHILDREN, PARENTS OR SIBLINGS, WHO DEVOTE MOST OF THEIR TIME, ENERGY AND FUNDS TAKING CARE OF A LOVED ONE, LEAVING THEMSELVES DRAINED AND LEAVING THEIR OWN NEEDS BEHIND. FOR THOSE WHO SUFFER FROM AN ILLNESS OR DISABILITY, THE THOUGHT OF KNOWING THAT THEY CAN RECEIVE THE SAME BEAUTY SERVICES AS HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS, OR THAT THEY LOOK A LITTLE MORE LIKE THEMSELVES BEFORE THEY BECAME ILL, CAN HAVE AN INCREDIBLY UPLIFTING IMPACT. BY SENDING BEAUTY PROFESSIONALS TO THE HOMES OF ITS PATIENTS, THE FOUNDATION CAN PROVIDE IN-HOME BEAUTY TREATMENTS, SUCH AS A MANICURE, PEDICURE, HAIR CUT, BLOW-DRY, FACIAL TREATMENT AND/OR APPLICATION OF MAKE-UP, FREE OF CHARGE, WHILE HELPING TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF SUCH INDIVIDUALS, ONE TREATMENT AT A TIME. THE VISITS BY THE FOUNDATIONS VOLUNTEERS MEAN MORE THAN JUST A HAIRCUT OR A MANICURE. IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT MAKING THE PATIENTS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS LOOK BETTER; IT IS ABOUT MAKING THEM FEEL BETTER. BY SENDING BOTH A BEAUTY PROFESSIONAL AND A BEAUTY BUDDY ON EACH VISIT, THE TREATMENTS AND COMPANIONSHIP PROVIDED BY THE FOUNDATION HELP TO REJUVENATE THE EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WELL BEING OF THOSE WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM AN ILLNESS WHO MAY OTHERWISE BE UNABLE TO ACCESS A SALON OR SPA DUE TO THEIR MEDICAL CONDITION. WHILE THE FOUNDATION MAY NOT BE ABLE TO OFFER SUCH PATIENTS A CHANGE IN THEIR MEDICAL PROGNOSIS, THROUGH ITS EFFORTS OF BRINGING BEAUTY HOME, THE FOUNDATION HAS A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON BOTH THE WELL BEING AND STATE OF MIND OF ITS PATIENTS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS, AS WELL AS THEIR OVERALL QUALITY OF LIFE. IN 2012, BEAUTY BUS PERFORMED 1200 BEAUTY AND GROOMING SERVICES FOR 750 PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS. WITH THE TIME AND DEDICATION OF VOLUNTEERS TOTALING 1465 HOURS THE FOUNDATION COMPLETED 194 IN-HOME VISITS AND 20 POP-UP SALONS IN 2012.
