Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The walter steven sechrest endowment for wildlife protection is to protect endangered wildlife through anti-poaching efforts, including support to wildlife rangers at nature reserves around the world. The habitat for biodiversity endowment is to protect endangered wildlife through establishing nature preserves around the world, either through private, community, indigenous or government protection. PART X, LINE 2:

Gwc is exempt from federal income taxes under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3). No provision for income taxes has been made in the accompanying financial statements. Gwc has adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by gaap, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more likely than not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. Gwc has analyzed the tax positions taken in its filings with the internal revenue service and state jurisdictions where it operates. Gwc believes that its income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on gwc's financial position, changes in net assets or cash flows. Accordingly, gwc has not recorded any reserves, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain income tax positions at june 30, 2020 and 2019. Gwc is subject to income tax audits for the previous three years which are open. There are currently no income tax audits for any tax periods in progress.

IRS990/Desc0WE BELIEVE THAT CREATING, EXPANDING, AND MANAGING PROTECTED AREAS, INCLUDING INDIGENOUS AND COMMUNITY CONSERVATION AREAS, FOR THE LONG-TERM IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL WE HAVE TO PREVENT THE CONTINUED CATASTROPHIC LOSS OF NATURAL CARBON STOCKS AND BIODIVERSITY. OUR LOCAL PARTNERS ARE SUPPORTED BY A LEAN AND HIGHLY QUALIFIED CENTRAL TEAM THAT IS ALSO FOCUSED ON EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES TO MANAGE THEIR NATURAL RESOURCES, AND SUPPORTING GOVERNMENTS TO MANAGE PROTECTED AREA SYSTEMS. WE ARE A NIMBLE ORGANIZATION, AND THUS ARE ABLE TO ACT QUICKLY WHEN SOME OF OUR WORLD'S MOST IRREPLACEABLE PLACES FACE IMMEDIATE THREATS, SUCH AS THE DEVASTATING AUSTRALIAN WILDFIRES. SOME OF OUR ORGANIZATION'S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR IN PROTECTING WILDLANDS INCLUDE:- AFTER THE WILDFIRE OUTBREAK IN AUSTRALIA IN LATE 2019, GWC TOGETHER WITH EARTH ALLIANCE LAUNCHED THE AUSTRALIAN WILDFIRE FUND FOR WHICH 100% OF DONATIONS WERE USED TO ASSIST LOCAL FIREFIGHTING EFFORTS, SUPPORT AFFECTED LOCAL COMMUNITIES, RESCUE AND RECOVER WILDLIFE, AND IMPLEMENT LOCAL LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS TO RESTORE AND REPOPULATE UNIQUE ECOSYSTEMS DESTROYED BY THE WILDFIRES. - GWC PARTNERED WITH RAINFOREST TRUST, THE TURTLE CONSERVANCY, AND ITS LOCAL AFFILIATE HABIO, A.C., TO PURCHASE AN 18,850-ACRE FORMER CATTLE RANCH IN THE CHIHUAHUAN DESERT OF MEXICO, RANCHO GUIMBALETE, ON THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE BOLSON DE MAPIMI BIOSPHERE RESERVE THAT COVERS A LARGE TRACT OF LARGELY UNDAMAGED DESERT VEGETATION AND IS HOME TO A RANGE OF MIGRATORY AND RESIDENT WILDLIFE SPECIES INCLUDING THE CRITICALLY ENDANGERED BOLSON'S TORTOISE. - GWC PARTNERED WITH FAUNA & FLORA INTERNATIONAL, THE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS GROUP, AND THE GOVERNMENT OF ANTIGUA TO DEVELOP A CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR REDONDA ISLAND AND NOMINATE REDONDA AS A PROTECTED AREA FROM LAND TO SEA UNDER THE ENVIRONMENT ACT 2019. THIS COMMUNITY-DRIVEN PROJECT WILL ESTABLISH THE BIGGEST MARINE RESERVE IN THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN AT 29,000 HECTARES, BENEFITTING APPROXIMATELY 30 GLOBALLY THREATENED AND NEAR-THREATENED SPECIES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0OUR SPECIES WORK IS FOCUSED ON INCREASING CONSERVATION ACTION FOR EARTH'S MOST IMPERILED SPECIES. WHEN POSSIBLE, GWC ENDEAVORS TO CONSERVE GROUPS OF CLOSELY RELATED SPECIES TO SCALE UP CONSERVATION. DOING SO HAS ALLOWED US TO CULTIVATE AND EMPOWER GLOBAL LEADERSHIP ON EACH SPECIES GROUP, ADDRESS THREATS AFFECTING MULTIPLE SPECIES, AND BUILD COALITIONS AROUND IMPACTFUL CONSERVATION AT SCALE, THUS CREATING GREATER EFFICIENCIES AMOUNG PROJECTS FOR BETTER SUCCESS. SOME OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS IN PROTECTING WILDLIFE INCLUDE:- GWC CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE NEW ZEALAND DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION'S KAKI RECOVERY PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDED A NEW BROODER ROOM FOR HAND-REARING CHICKS AND A NEW AVIARY FOR JUVENILE KAKI. THE ADULT POPULATION OF THE CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES HAS INCREASED BY 30 PERCENT TO 169, THE LARGEST INCREASE IN NEARLY 40 YEARS THAT HAS ALLOWED THE DEPARTMENT TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER OF BIRDS THAT THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO HATCH AND HOUSE AS PART OF THIS SUCCESSFUL BREEDING AND REINTRODUCTION PROGRAM, WHICH COULD MEAN UP TO 60 EXTRA BIRDS RELEASED INTO THE WILD EACH YEAR. - GWC WORKED WITH OUR PARTNER AUSSIE ARK IN AUSTRALIA TO RESPOND QUICKLY WITH TARGETED ACTIONS TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF ANIMALS FROM THE FIRES IN NEW SOUTH WALES AND PREVENT THE LOSS OF THE LAST INDIVIDUALS FROM POPULATIONS OF SOME OF EARTH'S RAREST AND MOST ENDANGERED WILDLIFE SPECIES. IN TOTAL, MORE THAN 1,000 ANIMALS WERE TRANSPORTED TO SAFETY, AND CONSERVATIVELY 10,000 INDIVIDUALS OF THE SPECIES AND MANY SMALLER ANIMALS WERE SAVED AS AUSSIE ARK GUIDED FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL FIRE FIGHTERS TO THE LOCATIONS OF WILDLIFE POPULATIONS THAT WERE MOST THREATENED BY THE FIRES. WE ALSO SUPPORTED AUSSIE ARK TO BEGIN THE WORK OF RESTORING HABITATS SO THAT THESE ANIMALS CAN BE RETURNED TO THE WILD. - TOGETHER WITH IUCN SSC PRIMATE SPECIALIST GROUP (PSG) INTERNATIONAL PRIMATOLOGY SOCIETY (IPS) GLOBAL WILDLIFE CONSERVATION (GWC) BRISTOL ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY (BZS), RELEASED "THE PRIMATES IN PERIL: THE WORLD'S 25 MOST ENDANGERED PRIMATES, 2018-2020" REPORT. THE REPORT IS A POWERFUL CALL TO ACTION THAT HAS HELPED RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF PRIMATES GENERALLY AND THOSE MOST ENDANGERED SPECIFICALLY, HELPING CONSERVATIONISTS PRIORITIZE THEIR EFFORTS AND DEVELOP EFFECTIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH GOVERNMENT, LOCAL NGO'S, AND COMMUNITIES. - TOGETHER WITH WILDLIFE CONSERVATION SOCIETY AND WILDAID, GWC LAUNCHED COALITION TO END THE TRADE TO IMPLEMENT KEY STRATEGIES THAT SEEK TO END THIS TRADE AND CALL FOR THE PERMANENT END TO THE COMMERCIAL TRADE AND SALE IN MARKETS OF TERRESTRIAL ANIMALS FOR CONSUMPTION, PARTICULARLY BIRDS AND MAMMALS. THE COALITION IS ALSO WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION TO END THE ILLEGAL TRADE OF WILDLIFE IN PART TO HELP BUILD A STRONG NETWORK OF GLOBAL VOICES ON THIS CRISIS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SINCE OUR FOUNDING, WE HAVE HELD FAST TO OUR FOUNDING PRINCIPLE THAT LOCAL, COMMUNITY-LED CONSERVATION ACTION IS KEY TO AFFECT ENDURING CHANGE. WE CONTINUED OUR WORK WITH LOCAL FOREST-DEPENDENT AND INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES TO INCREASE THEIR CAPACITY TO MONITOR, CONTROL, AND REDUCE ILLEGAL ACTIVITES TAKING PLACE IN THEIR TERRITORIES. WE ALSO REMAINED A DRIVING FORCE FOR THE BUILDING OF A BETTER SUPPORTED, CAPACITATED, AND PROFESSIONAL GLOBAL RANGER WORKFORCE FOR THE ESTIMATED 1.5 MILLION RANGERS OF THE WORLD, WHO COLLECTIVELY PROTECT MORE THAN 30% OF THE PLANET. SOME OF OUR ORGANIZATION'S ACHIEVEMENTS WORKING WITH CONSERVATION GUARDIANS INCLUDE: - TOGETHER WITH EARTH ALLIANCE AND THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, GWC SUPPORTED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK'S VIRUNGA FUND TO HELP THE WIDOWS AND CHILDREN OF THE FALLEN RANGERS, AND ALSO PROVIDE SUPPORT SO URGENTLY NEEDED BY VIRUNGA'S RANGERS TO BE ABLE TO SAFELY ENGAGE IN PARK PROTECTION, DELIVER CITICAL DISEASE PREVENTION EFFORTS, ENFORCE LAWS, AND SAFEGUARD VIRUNGA'S WILDLIFE, INCLUDING THE ICONIC MOUNTAIN GORILLA. - GWC, THE INTERNATIONAL RANGER FEDERATION, AND WWF COMBINED FORCES TO CONVENE AN INTERNATIONAL COALITION OF ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT RANGER NEEDS CALLED THE UNIVERSAL RANGER SUPPORT ALLIANCE, A COALITION THAT IS WORKING TO BUILD A GLOBAL FOUNDATION FOR ENSURING THE STRUCTURAL, PROFESSIONAL, AND CAPACITY NEEDS OF THE WORLD'S RANGERS, GUIDED BY THE CHITWAN DECLARATION AGREED AT THE WORLD RANGERS CONGRESS 2019. - IN PANAMA, WE PROVIDED TRAINING TO THE INDIGENOUS EMBERA PEOPLE TO USE SPATIAL MONITORING AND REPORTING TOOL (SMART) TO MONITOR AND PATROL THEIR LANDS, AND PROVIDED SUPPORT TO THESE TERRITORIES TO HELP THEM SUSTAINABLY MANAGE THEIR NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENGAGE IN A FORMAL TITLING PROCESS WHILE PROTECTING SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RAINFOREST IN MESOAMERICA.
