Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Critical Exposure teaches and inspires DC youth to harness the power of photography and their own voices to become effective organizers for educational equity.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Outreach/marketing & communications: Critical Exposure works with participating students to identify opportunities for the students' photographs and stories to reach both as broad an audience as possible and targeted audiences such as public officials, school administrators, and community members. This outreach primarily takes the form of traveling exhibits and online displays of the students' work. Exhibits take place at art galleries, conferences, coffee shops, libraries, and other public spaces. The exhibits are an opportunity for youth to share their perspectives on issues impacting their lives to build the public support and political will needed to implement concrete solutions and policy changes to address those issues. This program also involves the recruitment of youth participants and new partner organizations.
Activity 3
Remote projects/train-the-trainer model: Critical Exposure partners with youth-serving organizations and campaigns across the country to support their local, state, and national efforts to improve public education or address other issues impacting youth. Prior projects have taken place in Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans, rural Arkansas and Mississippi, and other locations.Accomplishments from FY13 include:-Critical Exposure received the D.C. Mayor's Arts Award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education.-Students' photographs were featured in the Washington Post and on the New York Times Lens Blog.-We doubled the average number of hours of instruction offered for each class from the prior year.-Over 4,500 people viewed our students' work.-87% of our students reported that they now believe youth working together can effectively create change in their schools and communities.-We served 175 students, 99% of whom were students of color.

IRS990/Description0D.C. school-based and afterschool programs: Critical Exposure teaches students the basics of documentary photography and advocacy through a series of workshops. Students are exposed to the work of a range of photographers and learn to "read" images, analyzing them to determine their subject, mood, and message. They are also introduced to techniques for taking compelling photographs themselves, such as composition, framing, and perspective. They discuss what they believe is important for the public to know about their lives and develop their own "shot lists" of images they want to capture. Once they have some initial training, students receive cameras and have the opportunity to apply their learning. Students receive constructive feedback on their photographs from their peers and instructors, as well as from local professional photographers. They help select photographs to be included in public exhibits and create written and audio captions to provide context for their images and to tell their stories. Students also discuss specific audiences they believe are important to reach, strategies for reaching them, and the messages they want to convey. They have the opportunity to exhibit their work publicly at local art galleries, coffee shops, libraries, and other locations.Students then put their ideas into action. Through advocacy training our students learn to use the power of their images and words to inform and engage public officials and the community at large. The goal is for students to secure meaningful changes that improve their lives and to realize that they have the right and ability to change the world around them.Through these programs, D.C. youth are able to develop their photography, self-expression, and leadership skills. Youth have identified and photographed a wide range of issues impacting their education and their lives. Topics of concern have included school facilities, school discipline policies, health and nutrition, youth employment, and teen pregnancy. Students have secured powerful media attention for their messages, shared their photographs directly with public officials, testified at public hearings, and are constantly finding new, more effective ways to be seen and heard.

IRS990/MissionDescription0Critical Exposure's mission is to teach youth how to use the power of photography and their own voices to become effective advocates for school reform and social change. We create a connection between art and advocacy using a three-pronged approach:1) Youth Empowerment: Provide students with training in documentary photography, leadership, and advocacy; teach them how to document issues that impact their lives; and help them to use their images and voices to advocate for positive solutions to those issues.2) Public Engagement: Inform and engage the public by using students' photographs and writing to create traveling exhibits that can be shown in galleries, coffee shops, and other public spaces to build awareness of the issues facing young people.3) Real Change: Partner with advocacy and community organizations to implement creative strategies to strengthen campaigns to improve our schools and communities.

IRS990ScheduleI/Form990ScheduleIPartIV/Explanation0Schedule I, Part I, Line 2: The "Intern & Housing Stipends" are monthly housing stipends that are sent directly to the landlords of AmeriCorps*VISTA members serving their second year with Critical Exposure. The "Youth Stipends & Travel" are used for two purposes: the stipends component refers to amounts given to high school students participating in the Fellowship program. The recipients are paid an hourly rate and their attendance is tracked by two staff members. The travel funds are used to cover the cost of students traveling to and from the program site, as well as the cost of taking them to conferences and other program-related trips.

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation0The Finance Committee reviews the federal Form 990 and then submits it to the full Board of Directors prior to filing with the Internal Revenue Service.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation1The Board of Directors approved a conflict of interest policy applicable to officers, directors, members of committees of the Board of Directors, and employees that (i) defines conflicts of interest (including competing financial interests or fiduciary duties); (ii) requires that conflicts be disclosed; and (iii) requires that the conflicted person be recused from any decision-making with regard to the matter. This policy is distributed to all officers, directors, and members of committees of the Board of Directors. Each director, principal officer, and member of a committee with Board of Directors delegated powers signs a statement which affirms that such person: (i) has received a copy of the conflict of interest policy; (ii) has read and understands the policy; (iii) has agreed to comply with the policy; and (iv) understands that the Corporation is charitable and that in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation2Compensation decisions are approved by the Compensation Committee and the Board of Directors. In making the decision, Critical Exposure uses comparability data and the decisions are documented in the Board of Directors' minutes.
IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation3Critical Exposure makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.
