Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Greener partners' mission is to strengthen community health through urban farming, fresh food access, and food education. Since our founding in 2008, we have partnered with schools and hospitals to address barriers to healthy food and to develop underutilized land into productive urban farms. Our programs ignite life-long healthy eating habits through gardening, cooking, and nutrition education and through free fruit and vegetable distributions.

Greener partners' mission is to build healthier communities through food, farms and education.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

Launched in april 2013, farm explorer is an innovative, hands-on mobile farm and education program that engages participants in the story of food from seed to plate. Housed in a 24-foot custom-built trailer hauled by a bio-diesel truck, farm explorer is equipped with garden beds and a mobile kitchen. Farm explorer outreach focuses on marginalized communities and areas that lack connection to the organization's farms. For schools with 51% or more students enrolled in the national school lunch program, the fees are waived. In 2013, the organization's farm-to-school programs traveled to 7 counties in 3 states, reaching 7,338 children. Additionally, in 2013 greener partners introduced heritage breed program at the longview farm. This program highlights that many breeds of farm animals, with unique and valuable traits, are going extinct. The organization's sheep, goats and pigs demonstrate the important role that animals play in contributing to a healthy and holistic farm environment - and the role that greener partners' farms play in safe-guarding livestock diversity.

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

Greener partners reduced the focus of its retail program, the longview market in 2013. The organization decided to scale back the transactional experience on the farm in order to increase the farm to school program and the farmer training program.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Tax filings for 2011, 2012, and 2013 are subject to examination, generally for three years after they were filed. In 2011, the organization began operations of a farm and market in collegeville, pa. A portion of the activities have been determined to be activity unrelated to the primary purpose of the organization and thus are subject to unrelated business income tax. The organization filed an exempt organization business income tax return and reported net operating losses for the years ended december 31 2012 and 2011 of approximately $77,000 and $540,000 respectively.
