Activity 2

Research & policy development: advance illinois conducts secondary research into education and education reform for the purpose of developing a policy agenda which will strengthen teacher and principal certification, preparation, and evaluation; build cutting-edge data systems; support the enactment of new common core state standard; test and disseminate strategies for how to best intervene in struggling schools and districts; craft a comprehensive and penetrating assessment strategy for the state; and build the state's long-term capacity to drive and implement its far-reaching education reform plans. Recent successes include illinois' pilot of kids (kindergarten readiness assessment) in 64 districts; illinois finalized and launched training for new principal and teacher evaluations; illinois' decision to maintain a commitment to high standards required for entry into teacher preparation programs; work with the state's p20 council on developing a clear, shared operational definition of college and career readiness that will facilitate a number of interrelated efforts across several fronts; and the launched of a common core standards communications campaign with a coalition of statewide partners.

Activity 3

Publications: advance illinois develops and commissions reports to spotlight areas of interest for education reform in illinois. In april 2012, we published a piece spotlighting the state's school improvement grant work: illinois progress report 2011-2012: improving our lowest performing schools. The premise of the report was to publicize the unprecedented federal investment to improve struggling schools, and ensure that schools, districts, and state policymakers learn from the early efforts to help these and others struggling schools. Also, in 2012, we researched, prepared, and reissued our biennial state report card, the state we're in, to share how illinois compares with other states across 55 data measures tracked for the current year, and for the last two, five, and ten previous years. The report also detailed key initiatives aimed at strengthening the public educational system that will come into play during the next several years.
