FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Hispanic alliance, inc. Is a not-for-profit local hispanic membership corporation. Its mission is to integrate the hispanic/latino community by uniting, supporting, and strengthening hispanic alliance (see schedule o) members in greater cleveland and northern ohio; and further the social, educational and economic development of the hispanic/latino community through advocacy, leadership development and the formation of strategic partnerships. Hispanic alliances' vision is to become the vehicle to integrate the hispanic/latino community and all of its stakeholders as a visible, recognizable and valuable presence within the hispanic/latino and the broader community.

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

Community redevelopment la villa hispana: continues to move forward and remains one of the premier community development projects on the west side. In 2017 we completed year one deliverables of our five-year action plan, cleveland's la villa hispana: the intersection of culture and commerce. This plan highlights the strong committee structure which allows for the three major tenets; community engagement, economic development, and arts and culture to operate within an agreed upon framework. La villa hispana, continues to work toward the creation and execution of an memorandum of understanding among partners and stakeholders. This will become even more important as we enter this fourth year of work. We also achieved a major milestone this fall when the hispanic business center signed a purchase agreement for the building to house el mercado, a community-based incubator for local latino owned businesses that will provide opportunities for small business development and job creation to enhance the lives of greater cleveland residents. El mercado is designed to create a vibrant center of retail shops, eateries and professional series that celebrates the community's rich latino culture. La placita, la villa hispana's open air market had a very successful third season in 2017. Attracting over 1000 community residents, stakeholders and businesses to the twice-held summer event. The expanded hours of 10 am to 11 pm culminated with salsa dancing to live music, at the end of these saturday nights. Although the hispanic alliance receives no funding for this initiative, board and staff remain an integral part of its leadership. Our executive director is a member of the executive committee, and staff are involved at every step of the deliverables.

Community engagement center: the cec has very quickly emerged as a recognizable and effective model to educate, organize and mobilize community residents to take action on the salient issues that impact them and their families. Cec staff is comprised of current and former haldi participants, which have received additional training by the greater cleveland congregations and ohio organizing collaborative to enhance their organizing skills. Build health challenge, cec represents the hispanic alliance on the consortium along with other community and institutional partners to identify and find solutions for the lead hazards in the homes in 44109. Northeast ohio association of hispanic health (noahh), staff continues to provide leadership to this effort. In 2017, noahh coordinated the first community walk against cancer. Over sixty residents and health care providers marched in a two-mile route throughout the clark/fulton neighborhood to raise awareness on how we all live with cancer. It culminated with an outdoor health fair and healthy snacks and drinks provided to participants. Nine healthcare providers also participated in the morning event, distributing information in english and spanish to all residents. The community response was profound. Plans are on the way to hold the 2nd annual caminata comunitaria contra el cancer, fall 2018. Noahh continues to work in collaboration with the department of health's office of minority health to hold a regional conference with four neighboring counties on black/brown health disparities. Community based organizations and leaders are also created a local resident community council to address systemic and institutional disparities between latino residents and local institutions to make equity and justice part of any serious dialog impacting their lives. Mujeres latinas de impacto mldi, (latino women of impact). In 2017, the community engagement center, also created mldi, it recruits, organizes and mobilizes latina women to create a framework that allows them to respond to community, professional and personal needs through a feminine lens. Mldi convenes quarterly, and has mobilized over forty women at each convening. The health and wellness committee responded to the hurricane that devastated puerto rico by holding a coat, scarf, glove and blanket drive to donate to those affected by the hurricane. Close to 2000 items were collected and donated over the course of three weeks to the puerto rican diaspora. Comite mejicano (mexican committee), is conceptualized as a nucleus of cultural and research activities that will serve both the mexican community and the greater latino community of northeast ohio. Our mission is to promote, help and support residents of cleveland's and norhteast ohio's mexican community. Our objective: promote mexican culture; identify services for mexican immigrants and support academic research related to the mexican community in the cleveland metropolitan area and northeast ohio. This is done through: cultural promotion and education; community service in the health, public safety and public education; and, academic research to obtain the necessary data on the mexican community in the u.s. Through grant seeking, academic collaboration, conferences and publications.

Spanish advisory board to the electorate (sabe) the spanish language advisory board came into existence with the department of justice consent decree mandating all election materials be available in spanish throughout cuyahoga county. Sabe currently functions as a volunteer group of eleven individuals, several who have graduated from the hispanic alliance leadership development initiative (haldi). In 2017 we celebrated the successes of our voter registration, civic engagement and get out the vote efforts, by increasing registered voters throughout the 44109 and ward 14 neighborhoods. Four-hundred-twenty new voters were registered. Although the hispanic alliance does not endorse any individual candidate or political party, the end result of this new voting bloc was instrumental in the election of the first puerto rican woman to city council in the history of cleveland. Sabe's effectiveness is directly related to pan (programa de alimentacion nutricional) in early july. Pan provided free freshly baked bread on saturday mornings throughout the 44109 and ward 14 neighborhoods, encouraging voter registration and gotv. Sabe also broadcasted its message on la mega, 87.7 fm, the local spanish language radio station. To date we have distributed six hundred and forty panes and registered 420 new voters. Club san lorenzo and benny's sports grill have hosted registration and gotv panels.

: haldi-hispanic alliance leadership development initiative: in may 2017, haldi-hispanic alliance leadership development initiative, graduated cohort v, its largest cohort ever. Twenty young emerging latino professionals were awarded completion certificates at the may commencement ceremony. Of these, 17 were women. They join an alumni group of 70 young latino professionals who have graduated from haldi since its inception in 2009. In august 2017, we began haldi cohort vi - 2018 with a new dynamic group of 15. After an intensive eight month curricula, which meets the third friday of each month, september through april, their expected graduation is may 2018. The haldi curriculum has been replicated at chicago's ruiz belvis cultural center. It has also been delivered at lakeland community college in lake county, ohio, in honor of hispanic heritage month. This condensed haldi curricula is geared toward community colleges for current and incoming latino students. Haldi continues to provide new and dynamic leadership to cleveland area organizations, civic committees, and for a variety of boards of directors. Its most recognizable element continues to be the authentic latino context in which leadership curricula is framed.
