| In 2023, Psephos Inc furthered its mission which was expanded by the Board of Directors in amended Bylaws in 2021 to include Social and Climate Justice. Psephos continued to provide financial, management and oversight support for the development of a water and food security project of the non-profit Centro Por la Ecologia y Economia Sustentable de San Miguel de Allende, AC, located in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The primary work was the establishment of a model community rainwater catchment and reforestation project, called Agua Para la Vida, in the rural campesino village of San Jose de Gracia, in the Municipality of San Miguel de Allende. This project successfully demonstrates the urgent necessity and viability of repairing historic rural water catchment systems which were abandoned in recent decades in favor of electric drilled wells. These wells have since run dry, leaving rural farming communities facing extreme water and food insecurity, as well as widespread health problems due to depleted wells now contaminated with heavy metals. The Agua Para la Vida project, begun in 2022, was expanded in 2023 through the organizing efforts of the Tikkun Eco Center in partnership with Psephos Inc, which helped raise and direct funds and provide management and development oversight to the Agua Para la Vida project. In 2023, the demonstration site in the San Jose de Gracia community was expanded through the building of a large community kiosk and meeting center, which also was constructed to house a solar energy electric system that was connected to a pumping system to bring the reservoir rainwater up to the village of approximately 300 people. A community watering trough was built for livestock in front of the local church. A drip irrigation system was installed to water the 1000 trees planted around the reservoir. Due to a historic drought and extreme heat waves in 2023, the rainwater was ultimately used up in the reservoir and the Tikkun Eco Center eventually purchased water to keep the 1000 saplings alive. In 2024 that drought ended, and the reservoir is once again full. The Centro Por la Ecologia also worked in 2023 to educate the San Miguel community on the local water crisis, and to develop meaningful partnerships with municipal agencies and local NGOs such as Caminos de Agua to expand the Agua Para la Vida project to include reservoir and watershed restoration in two other rural communities. This work came to fruition with new grants and project partnerships in 2024, including the restoration of a reservoir in the campesino Ejido (cooperative community) of Los Torres. Psephos Inc also supported the projects of the Tikkun Eco Center as a climate resilience demonstration and education center, providing classes, workshops, internships and volunteer opportunities for individuals, groups, and schools from Mexico and the US, with a focus on water catchment methods at the community or family farm levels, drought resilience, food security, watershed repair and reforestation. | - | $82,807 |
