Mission

Earn to Learn empowers low-to-moderate income students to successfully complete college. We do this through: -Matched savings scholarships -Financial capability education -College and Workforce Readiness Training -Success coaching -Mentoring

Major Activities

Activity 2
Assets for independence awarded funds to asu, ua and nau in the summer and fall of 2012. All three state universities reapplied for and were awarded a second round of funding in the fall of 2013. The total amount of federal and local funding for azel is now nearly 7,000,000 for the 2012 and 2013 afi grant cycles. All three universities launched az earn to learn in january 2013 and 70 students were enrolled in the statewide, inaugural cohort of fall 2013. Each university targets slightly different populations, although each complies with the afi income eligibility guidelines. Asus initial target audience was the high school student population at the asu preparatory academy and other partner schools connected to asus future sun devil families program. Beginning with the recruitment of the fall 2014 cohort, asu now targets all high school students. Uas initial target audience was high school students. For the fall 2014, ua opened recruitment to transfer students from arizona community colleges. Naus target population is high school students and community college transfer students with their primary focus being the native american population. Potential azel program participants access the program through multiple marketing efforts facilitated through target high schools, community partner networks, and preexisting university outreach programs. Participants who successfully complete azel program requirements receive an 8 to 1 match on savings (save 500, receive 4,000 match) for tuition costs at arizona state university, northern arizona university, and university of arizona. With nearly 7 million dollars funding the program, live the solution anticipates that more than 1,500 participants will complete the program and attend asu, nau, and ua within over the next 5 years. Lts has identified strategic partners and referral agencies, and has secured general operating funds for azel (a small portion of the afi award may be used for administration, program specific activities, case management, and data collection). Lts and the universities continue to reevaluate and refine the program model and recruitment strategies. Each university has customized outreach efforts and marketing materials to meet the needs of their specific target audience. Azel has identified financial institutions across the state of arizona as key partners for housing the idasfor the participants. To date, alliance bank, hughes federal credit union, vantage west credit union, and mutual of omaha bank have housed idas for azel participants.

LTS STAFF ALSO LEVERAGES STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS TO MAXIMIZE THE RETURN ON THE INVESTMENT FOR ELIGIBLE TMC PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING PROVIDING ADDITIONAL CONNECTIVITY TO THE EXISTING AVAILABLE DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN THE COMMUNITY FOR THOSE WHO QUALIFY. ONCE A SUCCESSFUL TRACK RECORD IS ESTABLISHED WITH TMC, THE GOAL IS TO PROMOTE THE EAH PROGRAM TO MULTIPLE EMPLOYERS IN PIMA COUNTY AND POTENTIALLY THROUGHOUT ARIZONA. THE TUCSON MEDICAL CENTER EAH PROGRAM WAS FUNDED WITH A 50,000 SEED GRANT. BASED ON THE TMC EAH PROGRAM GUIDELINES, EACH OF THE PARTICIPANTS WAS , IS REQUIRED TO HAVE A MINIMUM OF 1,000 OF THEIR OWN FUNDS IN THE TRANSACTION. THE TMC FOUNDATION WILL PROVIDE 2,000 AND LTS WILL MATCH AN ADDITIONAL 2,000 FOR A TOTAL DOWN PAYMENT OF 5,000 PER EMPLOYEE. THE PARTICIPANTS ARE FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS AND HAVE COMPLETED THE REQUIRED FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND HOUSING EDUCATION CURRICULUM REQUIRED BY THE PROGRAM. COMPREHENSIVE EMPLOYER ASSISTED HOUSING EAH BENEFITS MODEL IS A TURNKEY SOLUTION WITH TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL FOR EXPANSION IN PIMA COUNTY AND BEYOND. THE EAH PROGRAM ESSENTIALLY CREATES A HOUSING DEPARTMENT FOR AN EMPLOYER OR IN OTHER WORDS, ADDS AN ADDITIONAL BENEFIT TO THEIR EXISTING EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO EMPLOYEES BEYOND HEALTH, VISION, AND DENTAL. THE HOUSING BENEFITS INCLUDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYEES TO ACCESS: DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE, INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT, ACCOUNTS (MATCHED SAVINGS ACCOUNTS), RENTAL AND UTILITIES ASSISTANCE, CERTIFIED FORECLOSURE COUNSELORS, FINANCIAL EDUCATION, HOMEOWNERSHIP EDUCATION, CREDIT COUNSELING. IN ADDITION, EMPLOYERS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONDUCT A STAFF HOUSING SURVEY TO ASSESS NEEDS AND PROMOTE THE PROGRAM WITH STRATEGIC MARKETING MATERIALS PROVIDED BY LTS THAT HIGHLIGHT ALL OF THE COMPONENTS OF THE HOUSING BENEFITS PACKAGE. THE INTENTION IS THAT 100 PERCENT OF THE EMPLOYEES ARE AWARE OF THE PROGRAM AND KNOW THE BENEFITS IT OFFERS.
